Grits, sweet tea, moon pies, RC Cola, peanuts in a Coke, country music, and barbecue!
Yes, we have some ignorant people down here, but we know how to live.

It's a popular snack dessert treat here in the South a lot like a Little Debbie snack cake. Two round graham crackers, marshmellow-ish filling in-between, all dipped in chocolate. Looks like this: These are strictly in the South? Huh. Someone else told me recently that BC/Goody powders are a Southern thing too. I knew grits and sweet tea were definitely regional but moon pies? I really need to get out more. Oh, BC/ Goody's is definitely only a southern thing. Because it's one of those things you only buy at your neighborhood Piggly Wiggly or Winn-Dixie.

Collard greens, boiled peanuts, tomato sandwiches (only excusable application of mayo, and only Duke's), shrimp and grits if you're on the coast, beach music, shag dancing, clamming... These are what brought me back from the west coast.

Forgot about shag dancing! It's a style popular around the Carolina beach areas. You might find it worth a trip to Charleston. I also love cajun dancing in Louisiana, too.

cagedtiger please tell me that shag dancing is what it sounds like!? Sadly, no. obobfla beat me to posting that exact video, but that's what it is. Best danced to what's typically considered Carolina Beach music- The Drifters, The Platters, Chairmen of the Board, etc. If you can dig up eternaloptimism's old "sexual mischief" thread, I do have a story about that other kind in there... And again, part of why I'm ready to leave. The wife don't dance. Not even a little. And makes fun of me for wanting to dance or pushes me away. Unless she's really, really, really drunk.

I think they're like what we call Wagon Wheels. The cheap snack of our youth over here! They make em smaller these days than they used too

Thank you csl. Fascinating bit of history. I'm a retired librarian. What can I say, my trivia is important to me.

Beach music, as she are known... And you can't mention Shag without referencing Bill Deal and the Rhondells. AKA, the Sheiks of Shag. Only three big songs, all in '69, but they became legendary.

The shag is really cute. I used to dance (pre marriage). It's a big deal at family weddings, of course, too. I thought I could live w/o dancing w/ my partner. I miss it. A friend in my 12-step group said he always wanted to take lessons. I would like - but always never had someone to go with. cagedtiger - I find the dancing, & reaction to it, an on-point analog for sex, vulnerability, intimacy. I can't believe (well, yes I can) that she mocks for it. That's her defense for feeling inadequate. I am sad today. The cute couple being so well tuned to each other made the sadness a little stronger actually. I know it will pass. I haven't been able to do any jogging lately- I'm missing the mood lift it gives. Finals for 3 days this week & then I'll have (make) time for a run. It will get better. But this morning I'm just sad for all of us who have much to give but we offered it to people who no longer want it, or maybe never really did want it. I hope everyone has an ok day.

Conversation at dinner the other night:
"I'm sorry I hurt you when I asked about the [sex] thing the other night. That wasn't my intent. I just want to understand where you're coming from and why it's important to you."
