Ok, he is a man boy and I indulge it. He has a well paid and stressful job that he wants to quit. I know he hates it but look at the unemployement figures and business closures. He quits and he is unemployed for years. I have told him he will lose his apartment and is NOT moving in with us. I will offer any moral support he needs to manage the stress. All I can seem to do is say hang in there budfy when I know it is a huge suffering. But nothing like the hellstorm of quitting. Sigh, still think I should put him on ebay. He is a projdct for some woman surely

Regardless of what your son does to put the beans on the table it is an axiom in the US that you don't quit a good paying job unless you have an equal or better job waiting for you. That means a written offer, not the verbal promise of some peon HR manager.

Well Brother lessingham , you've told him he "is NOT moving in with us (you)". You've put your cred on the line there, I hope it doesn't get shred.

He has a well paid and stressful job that he wants to quit. I know he hates it but look at the unemployment figures and business closures. He quits and he is unemployed for years. I was passed over for promotion repeatedly. I do not live to work so I understandably did not catch supervisors eyes. People who focused on the work to the exclusion of all else were better suited to the high paying jobs in any given company. So, I made my own company. I promoted myself to CEO. I have a full time job and dedicate maybe three hours a week to my own business. I am the HR, Legal, Operations, Marketing, Sales, and IT Departments. It's a terrific job. I recommend it. The hours are flexible, the job security is impregnable, you only work with people you like, you generally control your work load (have a sale if you want more work, raise your prices if you want less.) Maybe your son would be interested in making his next job rather than finding one. But his regular job is his income. New businesses are really dangerous to rely on for income until they're well established. When his lean weeks provide him with adequate income for the most basic living, then he can quit the irritating but lucrative job.

Lessingham: “ I have told him he will lose his apartment and is NOT moving in with us. “
Do you have the strength to stand by this even if he is on the streets?can your overbearing wife overrule you?

It's much easier I think for most to get a job than to start a business. lessingham I think your son and wife are spoiled brats, alas. You gonna enable them to stay that way? If you do, you may live to regret it but that's your choice.

I tell him the folk wisdom of the working class. It is easier to get a job when you have a job. You think your job is bad, try unemployment. Etc. I am encouraging him to build a "fuck you" fund. 6 months salary in the bank so that you have the ability to say fuck you to the boss. Times is hard and getting harder.

It's much easier I think for most to get a job than to start a business. That depends. Do you have a criminal record? Do you have a handicap? Are you over 55? Are you under 18? Are you a minority in a less than open-minded geographic area? Have you been out of work longer than 3 months? Do you have large gaps in your resume? Have you been fired repeatedly? All these may make finding a job extremely hard. Further, making a business can be pushing a lawn mower down the street and knocking on doors of people with long grass. If just one person says "Yes."...that's a business. It won't pay rent for a while, but it has all those advantages I mentioned. Many companies you'd work for or hire to do things have workers that could offer to do it for you on their own. A company is at its root an introduction service between customers and skilled people that do the work you need. Starting a business and making money isn't hard. Building it hasn't been hard either. But I don't work very hard. Instead, I have alowed time to work for me. I had one customer in 2007. Yesterday, I had 232 If everyone capable of starting a business, did? Corporate America would panic.

Probably the main problem is that you've been indulging him. ...

To use an Americanism I told him to lawyer up and launch a constructive dismissal claim.

Who will pay for his lawyer? You? From how you describe your son, he may have no case but just waste money and time. He needs to look for a new job.

He pays his own lawyer. My son is smart and hard working. His bit fault is a can do attitude. When things go wrong he steps in to try to put them right, so he is there in the middle ready for a heap of blame from the guys who screwed up.

In the US, he'd have a hard time getting his job BACK, lessingham. You sure he's not better off just moving on?
