I remember the old joke, "why are divorces so expensive? Because they are worth it."
My cost, 100% of the house, 30% of my income, 100% of my eldest daughter's college expenses, and half our retirement savings. Believe it or not, but per Illinois law it could have been worse.
It is a steep price in Illinois to end a long term marriage, and it is a testament to how insufferable of a wife she was that I can take a look at a price like that and say there is less pain than it would be to stay.
Oh, that figure does not count child support, life insurance, or health insurance for the kids.
I think my youngest can be emancipated in a year, if she chooses. I have also put out an offer of $50k cash to anyone that can marry her. I don't care how long they stay married. I just need that to break the maintenance agreement.

Damn, ironhamster. How much of that was mandated vs negotiated? And how many years of maintenance? At least you’ll still get the tax deduction for the alimony... as if that’s a bright point.

At least you’re free now to enjoy the rest of your life. I’m happy for you!

It's good that this has been ruled off at a moment in time Brother ironhamster . You know - as of this moment in time - exactly where you are financially, and a new game starts. In this game you are paddling your own canoe, making the choices that are in your best longer term interests, and with time to restore your financial health. Not such a bad base from which to launch into the rest of your life mate.

DryCreek, it was all negotiated except for some piddly stuff. My lawyer felt it was the best we could do. In retrospect, I wish we would have fought harder, and risked more. The 30% is for forever. Technically, until she cohabitates or remarries. I have no evidence she will even consider dating. She has an economic incentive to not get married. It makes the $50k reward seem like a joke, but it's not. It's burning a hole in my pocket.

I will have some time to mull it over, and reconstruct my life, but it is a bitter pill to swallow. She went after my overtime, so I will cut back and there will be no overtime. She extended the child support, so I will work to get my daughter emancipated. I was adamant that her massive cash settlement and my offer to cover my eldest's college expenses would get me out of cutting a check to her lawyer, but it didn't. It is a token payment. It will not come in a standard envelope. It will come welded in a steel box. I don't like to be told what to do. The payment is about fucking with me. I will fuck back.

ironhamster, that’s one hell of a toll. I get that you’re buying your way out of a bad situation. But for someone who’s in an unhappy but not hostile situation, that would surely be too great a price.

I’m with you that the emotional freedom from abuse is worth every physical dollar. It sucks hind tit that IL law is so damn harsh. But I really believe it will be worth every last cent.
And DO fuck back in whatever way you can, brother. The financial fuck is the only kind we get from our refuser.

Congrats my friend! The money is rough but about what you expected.
I love the 50k reward idea!! Hilarious! And this is a great place to get access to soon to be divorced sexless men, which is perfect. 😉
But breathe free today. You are no longer married.

He Will only get the tax deduction because he got the divorce done before 12/31/2018. Tax law changes then where the recipient not payer receives it then.

They know I am true to my word and the money is real. Word will get around, starting in the break rooms then the bars.
