I also consider LASIK my second best money expenditure. Divorce was my best.

Just Lasik but I will be "blind"for a few hours I think😉 Lasik was hands down the best money I've ever spent. Granted I may have to ammend that based on the outcome of the divorce, but the jury is out on that one. What Rx did you go from and where did you end up? I've heard it targets getting to 20/40 (i.e., legal to drive without glasses). Does it actually yield better results these days, or do you still end up wearing a prescription for near or far vision? (Among other things, I'm a photographer and very picky about sharp vision.)

Mine went from 20/200ish to 20/13 It was as though I had been given X Men powers. And I had it done like 16 years ago. Now over time it wears off. I'm down to something like 20/30 now and need reading glasses to avoid headaches. But 15 years of superpowers was a great run!

I was very nearsighted and went from plus or minus 8 (I always forget which is true for nearsightedness) without glasses to 20:15 and eventually 20:30. Had it done 9 years ago when in my mid 50s. Needed bifocals then. Now to my doctor's surprise, I've never even needed reading glasses.

As an optician I can answer these for you. You had a minus 8.00 Those are dioptric increments. ( the strength of the negative curve in your lenses) That is to improve your distance vision. You where very nearsighted. Think of it as, "that's what you are" able to see things close up, but not far away. Lasik surgery fixes that. Not farsightedness, or a better understanding, you would still need readers. 20/30 is based on the Snellin chart. That means you probably only need a +.50 reader. And a +.25 for intermediate (that's for arms length, like reading a computer or holding a newspaper.) Most people bennifit from readers when they need a +1.00. The magic age, (like a broad estimate for most people) is the age of 40 yrs old. That's when the muscles in your eyes begin to loose their strength. Think of it like a rubber band looses it's elasticity over time. My Rx started at a +1.00 at age 45 . In just a matter of 2 yrs I was up to a +2.50 now at age 53 need a +3.00. Even though I can see distance without my glasses, in todays world I am on the computer, phone, swiping credit cards, the screen on the dash, painting, reading, I prefer to wear my glasses all the time.
I love my transitional lenses when I step into the sun. That slows down at age 40 too. Your eyes ability to readjust from sunlight.
LASIK has been around since, what, the early 90's? The risks of long term affects where still unknown. Since then LASIK has proven itself to be highly successful, including long term. For improving your distance viewing. (It won't help you see into the distance as you get deeper into a SM!)
Hope that helps.

Sorry lyn to hijack your thread! Actually I think I'm the one to apologize. I just wanted to make sure the "minor procedure" was minor and wish her luck. I didn't mean to move the thread to optometry. Sorry, Lyn!

Another vote for LASIK here. I did it about 3 years ago, and I love the results. 53 years old and I don't even need readers.
