This morning at my men's bible study someone brought up all the problems they were having with raising their stepdaughters. Several of the men said, " puberty is the time when they need there dad the most. You should be hugging your daughter, because if you don't there are plenty of 14 yr old boys waiting to dump there testosterone on them! I chimed in with, " my controlling spouse informed me two years ago, not to hug or kiss my daughters anymore, that was wrong. They are getting to old for that" I call that her, " old school ways of thinking" i told the guys, " yea, my wife has my daughters giving her a good night kiss and a hug, while they wave at me from across the room and say goodnight" . " then my daughter feels like she can hug me in private, when mom's not around" SICK ISN't it! One of the guys said," ask your wife who she would rather have hugging your daughter, you or some 15 yr old boy?" A book that was recommended for me is titled, " She Calls Me Daddy" I plan on reading it. All thoughts, comments, advise, are welcome. ( except for any shallow comments about bible study) Maybe its mentioned later, if not " Dad Here's What I Really Need from You" by Michelle Watson, specifically for dad's raising daughters.

Running

I'm not sure I can handle running up mountains though, @mountainrunner . True confession time - I rarely run up steep hills unless they're pretty darn short or I'm running less than 8-9 miles. On my distance runs, I hike the steep ups and run the rest. One of the things that attracted me to ultra marathons was the more relaxed attitude - for most of us, just accomplishing the distance is enough. I also love the strategy of long distance - deciding when to hike versus run, when and what to eat, staying on top of hydration and electrolytes, how to use the terrain to your advantage, what to carry in your pack, etc. That's impressive! The distances you cover. You're a machine.

Sounds like we're fishing, that's what I say when I catch a little one. Gotta be some bigger ones in here.

Awww..that is sweet of you to say. I wouldn't mind a younger man! (not 26! ha!) If you're attracting 26 year olds, there are plenty of 36 and 46 year olds where he came from.

Funny you should bring up retirement. I am still waiting for my security clearance to come through so I can start my job. I was all psyched to start last week, so I didn't have anything planned for this week. And it's been too rainy to just hit the beach, so I am more bored than I have been in decades. And that got me to thinking: how do housewives and retired people stand it?! I may not be able to afford to retire. But if I do, I would not be at all surprised if I find some kind of low-key retirement job anyway. I NEED to get out of my home and see other people.

One day I'm going to replicate that whole scenario IRL except the woman will be there...and we'll throw in some fishing and cooking the fish we caught for dinner, a fire in the fireplace or firepit...........and a few days of wrecking the bed. bow-chicka...................

I worry about retirement all the time. In fact, it is one of the things that motivates me most to get out sooner rather than later! We have nothing in common. His drinking will escalate. His TV time will escalate. If he's anything like his father, his temper will escalate. No thank you. In fact, when I keep my eye on the ball - NOT spending retirement with him, I become very motivated and empowered to leave. I hope I'm strong enough. Oh, and Richard , marriage has those same 3 phases for women too. My choice is this - do I sit around waiting, letting the stress kill me or do I get out? Make a plan and get the hell out!

Awwww, thank you everyone for validating what I think my plans are regarding retirement. I've held that I will never fully retire, but always keep working at least part of the time and spend the rest of the time pursuing my passions. I can't stand to be in the house all day even when I'm sick, so that's not going to work for me. I've been in commercial real estate for 25 years and will continue that until the day I die whether that is 60 or 85 as long as I don't have dementia, fingers crossed!!!!!!!! It may be pro-bono work in the later years, but I'm going to be making deals until they close the door to the burner they will cremate me in.

I took a stand today. Mr. Orderly did not clean and put away his griddle or his tuna salad in a bowl. I decided not to dump the tuna on his bad but instead, placed both on top of the bedside table next to his bed. To his credit, I got a "touché" and a chuckle and he cleaned it himself. If you weren't contaminating your own living space, it would be funny to regularly hide this stuff all over the place for him to use his nose to track down his messes. If he gets good enough at it, you can take him to a disaster as a cadaver human. He can have a collar with his name on it!!
