www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-28/why-you-re-being-invited-to-fewer-weddingsSo less people are getting married? So what? Does this bother you? (BTW- thank you for not inviting me) I've always felt that marriages should have a "expiration date". Renewable of course. (Robert Heinlein was the first person who tossed this idea around - to the best of my knowledge) A contract for 5 years. Or ten. Or 20. Having children would change the terms but still. Why aren't we approaching marriage intelligently? "Let's create a system that costs thousands of dollars to end it." If there was an expiration date lawyers may have to work for a living. Yes, the "idea" of marriage predates written language. Times change.

Admittedly, I'm still a bit cynical about marriage since I left mine...Fewer people getting married doesn't bother me at all. Get married, don't get married, whatever makes a couple happy. The weddings I have attended lately have cost enough to be a down-payment on a house or purchase a new car outright, and that seems nuts to me to spend that much on one day. If the life after the marriage is as happy as the day of, is what I wish for them.

Of course florists are upset, along with caterers, etc... businesses that rely on weddings, but yeah - I don't care either. I can see why people don't get married and I am happy for everyone as long as they are happy. Times are always changing. "The Media" is trying to say that marrying yourself is a trend now among millennials, but not sure it's quite to that level. There is a kit you can buy to tie the nuptials with yourself for $230, though. imarriedme.com/THere is always something new to capitalize on...

I guess solemn vows about caring for each other is thrown out the window. Men and women only cares about "what's in it for me" is the new attitude.

I wonder how long until that's legally recognized... and then, what effect it has on a subsequent claim of common-law marriage for assets. I mean, if you can't be married twice, is it a preemptive strike? The Media... always ready to promote anything salacious to get ratings.

Imagine being married to yourself and being SM. What sorcery would that be? You couldnt even leave the bedroom to sleep with the self you can stand.
I can see the display in the bookstore:
"50 shades of different personalities"

Yeah, I'm sure that thing will end well...

I don't think anyone with any sense would invite me to a wedding. Your mileage may vary, but i absolutely don't believe in it.

Less people getting married ?
That will ruin the toaster industry in my jurisdiction.

If this one ends, I won't go through with another. Why would anyone today want to risk financial ruin if things go south? Then throw kids into the mix that you possibly could never get to see again and it's an outlook that many more people have a strong incentive to avoid. Many more of today's younger generation grew up seeing the effects of divorce first hand. It only makes sense that they wouldn't want to risk living through the same ordeal that ripped their parents apart, especially if it was a nasty divorce.

A week from now, my eldest is getting married. I've discussed with her some pitfalls I've experienced, and I've finished the trust paperwork to protect her assets. The rest is up to her.
