I wanted to start a thread about the spouse giving or receiving a Christmas gift that can be taken in a good or a bad way, and which way they go.
For example, I bought my wife a very nice 9 tier shoe rack for Christmas (the smallest of 5 gifts). I know when she opens it she will think it is a shot at her very large shoe collection and how it is not organized very efficiently (she will say I am calling her messy or some such thing). It is true, she is right, it is a little bit of a ribbing. And I would not have bought it for her because of that very reason. But, and this is the truth, I was with the twins and they went gaga over it and thought it was just perfect for Mom and wanted to give her the gift! So I bought it for them to give their Mom, who am I to spoil their fun??
I will let you know how it goes over tomorrow when the wife opens it, and I am pretty sure I will receive something back that can be taken as a shot at me, so I will in fairness disclose anything I can take offense to (but I have a sense of humor) and we will see what happens Christmas Day!
I really am not trying to start a fight, and I am going to have to put the whole thing together(and their is the distinct possibility she will return it if she wishes). Do you think there is a line for giving gifts and am I stepping over the line?

I think it's a fair gift and really the kids thought of it so if she takes offense that's her problem. The truth hurts!

I think it's fair & not over the line. And that is bolstered by the kids selecting it.

If someone is determined to be offended, they will manage to get offended no matter what. It is not worth investing much time or thought or energy into such people.

@boulderbob , I hope you don't end up here! That is bad news, obobfla . I have been in the doghouse(or shithole) for years and just do not think I will ever be eligible for a parole hearing!

Sorry, I'm contributing to this thread going way off course, but thebaffledking's comment reminded me of this movie clip I came across again recently. It's from a patently awful movie called Burn After Reading, but it does have George Clooney... as a gift, this contraption would fall way beyond 'questionable' for a refuser

I hardly remember some of it but I love Francis Durbin (I think that's that actress' name). It's a movie from the Cohen brothers & they have a particular sense of dry humor that's ludicrous & (I find) delightful.
