At work, I just got an email that went out to everyone on the base, telling us:
Listened to VDEM conference:
On the same level as Floyd, Irene, Isabel
- the storm is supposed to hit the Carolinas as a cat. 2
- initial impact (in Virginia) could be as early as Friday night
- Saturday morning winds gusts 40-45 mph up I-95 corridor
- Saturday afternoon hurricane gusts along coast...others up to 50 mph gusts
- Timeline Friday night - Sunday
- Rainfall 4 to 8 inches
- Threat down trees with ground saturated....and power outages. Coastal flooding much like Isabel.
- Gov will declare state of emergency Weds or Thurs
And it ended with: Take this seriously. NOW.

I've been following this nervously- I've had a hard time making fun of our governor for declaring a state of emergency as early as he has, remembering what Floyd, Hugo, and others have done in years past.

This morning I saw an update saying that they think it will head northeast after it passes the Carolinas.

That is the challenge, isn't it? Taking it seriously. Too many false alarms. Floyd being the biggest nightmare. I have decided to stay put unless they make a mandatory evac of the islands. It just isn't worth the hassle. Hurricane party it is.

I'd get away if I were you. Be safe.
We were staying on Cape Cod when the hurricane Bob hit. My father in law called us around 4:00 am and told us to leave everything and get off the Cape. We were able to get off ahead of everyone. We lost about 20 trees but I don't remember if there was damage to the house.
We are flying to Atlanta for a wedding on Friday. Forecast WAS sunny, now rain. Bummer.

The rain is starting, the outermost bands. Surprising that in our high priced neighborhood , maybe 10 to 15 % put up hurricane shutters. Several still have cars in the driveway, trash cans outside.planters, and chairs. Others are leaving tomorrow. About 10 or 12 neighbors, (blocks away, fortunately) trimmed there palms and piled them in the street! Tomorrow is our regular pick up. There will be no pick up tomorrow. How selfish, it's all going to go blowing down the street, landing, flying who knows where? People are fun!

Please take care and follow any instruction for evacuation if requested. Better safe than sorry. I was in Hurricane Camille back in 1969 as a teen. It was horrible. 3 days of rain, thunderstorms, flooding, tornadoes and high winds. Scared the crap out of me.

Thanks for the concern, great to have you with us! I am not looking for pitty, or sympathy, please understand that. However people on here understand what it is like to have decades of SM, then to be 6 weeks into a Divorce with a manipulative controller. Riding out three days of a cat. 4 hurricane is like a vacation compared to 3 days with grandpa, 6 kids, total detachment, control of money, time, food, etc... This fear actually is the most excitement, thrill, adventure, risk , I have had in a long time. My neighbors and I will be looking out for each other, phone numbers have been exchanged. You dig wells at the bottom of valleys. This is a self improvement, go against the grain, stand up for myself time. I look forward to "acts of service" for people who will appreciate it, and not treat it as a duty that becomes a daily chore.

The other 8 members of the family went west.
