Vanity, fashion, "brand recognition". Gullibility, follow the herd, ignorance... There are reasons big manufacturers pay sport stars and actors/actresses megabucks to represent their products. Because they make those megabucks back, and more. Every time I see someone drawing welfare cheques run around with an iphone ... all I can do is roll my eyes. But it's "the thing to do".
All I can say is some people think a higher price equals something better.
My W is telling me the expensive hair dryers generate "ions" and dry hair. I used to repair copiers and laser printers and the older models had an ion filter to trap the ozone because they were harmful.
My W and daughter both had Dyson vacuums. The daughter's vac broke twice and wasn't repairable the second time. I fixed my W Dyson several times.
Petrushka, I suppose enough glitzy commercials can sell crap.
iPhones, UGG. (disgust)
The grand kids have them but have a difficult time paying for an oil change on the cars they drive. They also think they need a $45 cell phone cover because some of the other high school students have them. Their wages for 12 hrs a week working at McDonald's is spent on technology.

For the record, it matters.
If you have short hair, it doesn’t really matter, but......... long hair+cheap Walmart hairdryer=fried unhealthy looking hair. It doesn’t matter how expensive the shampoo and conditioner is or how many other products you slather on your hair, if you are blasting it with direct heat you are damaging the hair. That ionic thing - I can’t explain the science, but it makes A LOT of difference in how shiny and healthy your hair looks. Having longer hair is a pain in the butt, it’s also something that requires some investment. So if you don’t want to purchase an expensive hair dryer, that’s fine. But, for me, I’m working on growing out my hair and making sure it stays healthy because one day I hope to high Heaven someone will run their fingers through my hair and appreciate how soft and silky it is.
Southerngirl That ionic thing - I can’t explain the science,
From what I understand, similarly charged particles repel each other so if all your hair strands are negatively charged, the hair strands try to stay apart and their is more space between hair strands (in hair talk = volume) and fewer strands of hair clinging to each other.
I imagine too much heat causes the damage (frizzes) Maybe setting the heat to medium and not using high heat is a good idea.
On some airplanes, there are static straps on the wings. Air going past things builds up a static charge. Even in computer repair, a static charge is a problem. I have encountered dead computers because someone took an air hose to the inside of a computer to blow out the dust and lint buildup. Supposedly "canned air" is safe to use on the inside of a computer BUT do not spin the fans with canned air or an air hose. Spinning computer fans with air causes the fan to generate electricity. Stick something in the fan to keep it from spinning and you will be safer.
AH, running my fingers through a woman I like hair. That would be very nice and would come with a foot and back rub for starters. Southerngirl, I hope you get your wishes someday.
Jill of all trades here. To put myself through college and graduate school, I worked in a salon. For hairstylists, a good dryer with ion technology is an investment. They will use it every day, likely on every client. For the average person with medium to long hair, a mid-range dryer works well enough. Dysons are ridiculously expensive. But a CHI for $100-150 will last a long time and treat hair well. Ulta and Sephora have these on sale often.
Remember, you get what you pay for.
Ionic technologies, specifically negative ions work to seal the hair cuticle which leads to smooth, frizz-free, silky hair.
I found an Ionic hair dryer for my W and she seems to like it.
I used to repair copiers and they produced ions on a photo conductor drum and used light to make or erase an image. Along with the ions, the copiers also produced ozone, which is a form of smog. The copiers had a filter that trapped the ozone because ozone is good in the upper atmosphere, but not good to breath. I also have read that some so called air cleaners trap minute particles but also produce ozone.
The idea of creating ions but no ozone was the main reason I made the post. Too many things are advertised as beneficial but the product may also have some negative to human. traits.
My W and daughter bought several "salt lamps" because they were promoted as "ion generators." I didn't buy into the "salt lamp" health benefit claims but sometimes a man just needs to keep quiet to keep the peace.
I understand how several catalytic process take place but I never read anything about how tourmaline influences ions. I need to read more about how tourmaline and usually heat, produces ions.
saarinista I think Dyson everything is just a bunch of marketing hooey.
I like the word HOOEY
Well, certain people (W and daughter) think the Dyson engineering is so advanced. The engineering is advanced in some areas but keeping things simple had some proven advantages. My daughter decided her Dyson vacuum cleaner wasn't worth repairing for the third time.

petrushka: Just attended a lecture on local history. Apparently the Presbyterian Scottish refugees who settled here called a 'frolic', what the Amish would call a 'barn raising'. First a working bee, then dancing and feasting.

mirrororchid: Sorry, dude. I think resentment has been the fuel for action in some SMs. It can be part of a process, eventually helpful.
