I like it better than the article I read.

Love the clip that jerri posted. I'm an American, but I do not think it's the greatest country in the world. And that's a reason that I'm now an expat.

My personal reaction is "so fucking what?". I've been trying to discourage people from using facebook (facilebook as I call them) for years and years -- mostly for reasons of cybersecurity because you would not believe the lengths that that company goes to to track you on the internet; they basically have their nose up your arse from the moment you subscribe, every time you fire up your web browser. Why on earth people would want to get their news coverage from there, a site notorious for disseminating all kinds of disinformation, lies, and conspiracy theories, is beyond me, when there are perfectly reputable sites available ( Handy listed a bunch of them, and for those who don't mind a bit of good critical reportage I'd add www.theguardian.com to his list). Sod facebook. The more people abandon that outfit, the better i.m.o. -- they're toxic. Zuckerberg is toxic - I've seen him and his weasel words at the senate (or was it congress?) enquiry. Meh.

Facebook tries to track me and most likely everyone, EVERYWHERE I go. Right now there are 6 companies tracking me as i type. I have had more than36 companies track me. Right now one tracking piece of software I run all the time is informing me the software recorded headers blocked from 62 sources

I don't particularly mind being tracked by anyone. After years of being ignored by DH I like attention. For whatever reason, my life is an open book... Except on here.
As most of you, know nothing is free. Facebook is "free" to users because of its powerful ability to unearth precise groups of potential customers . They do this by logging clicks created when you visit sites, and then sell advertisers the ability to target market to people who visit those sites.
You do have to be careful not to get sucked into a scam. We almost got sucked into buying $12,000 worth of replacement windows because I've joined one too many FB groups on home renovation. 😮🤔

I dropped my FB and Amazon accounts because of their tracking. I still get fake telephone calls and e-mails related to a supposed Amazon account or a delivery service, wanting to know some more information. I never respond.

Wish I could up-vote this more than once petrushka! I've never used and will never use facebook. Zuckerberg once described his 'target audience' as dumb fucks.... and then expects people to use his products. I get my news (in the UK) from right-wing sites like the Daily Telegraph (unfortunately paywalled) and left wingers like the Guardian (still free!) - Guardian being how I knew ILIASM was here ; Thanks to you, Pet! But on the whole The BBC is pretty damn good. Left wingers moan that the beeb is a tool of the (currently Conservative) government, and right wingers moan that the beeb is a bed of bleeding-heart left wing liberals........ if both extremes dislike it, it's probably doing something right!

Another here who has never touched it. Primarily because I value my privacy, but also because I don’t really see the point of it. I don’t need to show off what I had for lunch, my new kitchen, how cute my kids are or whatever else people do on it. Similarly, I am not curious about such stuff of other’s lives either. I keep in touch with people important to me without it with no difficulty. Maybe if I lived a distance from my folks or friends I may consider it but I doubt it. The privacy thing is too important to me. It blows my mind that there are people sufficiently stupid to receive their information about matters of importance via this method of little more than hearsay and gossip. The pandemic has shone a light on this with fantastically stupid people basing their decision making about their behaviours in relation to use of masks and social distancing etc, and choices about vaccines. Gullible morons who believe shit on FB rather than credible professionals of all flavours. Still can’t get my head around that.

A few thoughts (I live in the USA). My observations are that there isn't particularly any more chaos than at any other time in modern history. The Jan. 6th events were striking, yes. The Capitol building was also bombed in 1971 by the Weather Underground and in 1983 in protest of the military action in Grenada. The BLM protests occasionally turned riots over the Summer were quite serious but weren't as violent as the late 60s and early 70s. The UK had the "Winter of Discontent" in my lifetime and that seemed pretty chaotic. Anyway. Covid is quite serious and most people I know, and I live in a very conservative area, are taking it seriously and appropriate to their risk levels. The US hasn't covered itself in glory during Covid but time will tell how it plays out for all of us.
I would concur that much of the problem is social media. But for me its the misperception of its influence. Twitter is largely a trolling cesspool. But Pew Research found that of the fewer than 50 million US adults on Twitter only 6% of those Twitter users account for 73% of tweets about national politics. That means fewer than 1% of Americans are frequently weighing in about politics on this platform. It is very common to hear "Republicans believe X" or "Democrats believe X" in polling. Both of those groups, registered party members, account for somewhere between 25-30% each so the largest group in the USA doesn't have a party affiliation. In a nation of over 325 million people of very diverse background, geography and socioeconomics I'm personally not swayed much by group labels.
On the vaccine. I took two doses of the Moderna version. Moderna and Pfizer are the first ever mRNA vaccines used with the public. I'm a little concerned about that and I'm not a kook (at least I don't think so...that's what a kook would say though) and my educational background is biological. I don't judge anyone who is concerned about the risks. As a friend of mine said when we got dose #2, "Hope we're not in those lawyer commercials in 5-years...If you got the Covid vaccine you may be entitled to compensation".

this whole scene is priceless and we have much to learn and much to do. It's a movie but it's real for me. This is why it is okay to want to make America stand up take notice and not just cave in on the couch. This is why I sign up to work elections. We have some work to do, not fluff our eagle feathers and pretend because we each want our party to be in power. Lying at any cost. I showed this clip to a couple friends (I'm very politically center) and I got in trouble with both the left and the right. The US is not an easy place right now if you haven't "chosen a side" and I'm a sucky joiner.

And yet, there are things in that video that both parties can benefit from.

I'd like people who identify as Liberal, Conservative, Democrat, or Republican to finish this sentence: "The one thing _____________s get right is_____________" If someone took yours, please say another. Then I want all of them to listen to each other's answers before rebutting or debating. I'm speculating they'd each find a different thing they'd cop to sympathy for. Pro-life Democrats Gun rights Liberals Food Stamp Republicans Drug legalization conservatives They're all out there. But because we shoehorn one monolithic platform on everybody, we're under the impression we all agree. I suspect we don't. So we choose teams, instead of issues.
