Mostly carry-out food, little inside dining. Business have a difficult time finding and hiring workers so they close early or open later than normal. More smoke from forest and grass fires. Visibility flying 5 to 10 miles. Normally 50 to 100 miles. |

"Unfortunately, one can get extremely sick or even die despite being fully vaxxed. My fully vaxxed (J&J) partner got so ill with the Delta that he was on home oxygen 5 days and very sick for 2 weeks. A fully vaxxed friend died of Covid. Two fully vaxxed friends were hospitalized with Covid. In New Jersey as of last month, 49 fully vaxxed people had died of Covid. All were 50 or over and 80% had preconditions. The Delta variant seems especially contagious and dangerous even for fully vaxxed people. So, don't let your guard down even if fully vaxxed. Up until a month ago my church was acceding to pretty much all the precautions associated with preventing the spread of Covid19. It seem the worst was behind us. Since then the congregation has gotten pretty lax. No masks, no social distancing, etc. This Sunday I am going to re-institute fogging to sanitize between services, and I will be wearing my mask through the entire service. I can't control what other choose to do, but I can try and minimize the potential for a mass spreading event where I worship. I will also float the idea of furnishing and placing masks in the narthex for those who might forget and leave their mask in the car. The Pasifica population of New Zealand is around 7.5%. Yet in this latest outbreak of Covid, starting from ~ a month ago, 60% of those infected were Pasifica people.
What was/is the connection? Mega-churches. :-(
Looks like the breach in the dam has been largely stopped. We're down to 10-20 cases a day now, but around 1000 people got the virus. Geographically contained in the city of Auckland, by now. All from one man who brought it into the country. It remained undetected for just a little bit too long. Damn, but this is scary business, particularly in view of what northstarmom said re. vaccinated people ending up in hospital wards. |

I think the thing is, if YOU observe the assorted protocols, then YOU may not get covid and that would mean that you may have have prevented the next 2 people getting it getting it from you,
And if those 2 people observe the protocols, then they don't infect another 4.
Then those 4 don't infect another 8.
And those 8 then don't infect another 16.
And the next 32.
And the next 64. And so on through 128, 256, 512 onward to 8192 after 14 days.
Anyone who chooses to observe the protocols may interrupt the line of infection that would otherwise take place.
And anyone who chooses to not observe the protocols may assist in the ongoing exponential line of infection.
This is a pretty bad situation, but What strikes me about this is just how bad this would be had there not been any protocols put in place.

What was/is the connection? Mega-churches. :-( My thoughts on the outbreak in Auckland is that the more likely explanation for the rapid spread of Covid19 in this instance, is that it is less likely being due of the attendance of a religious service(s), and far more likely rooted in the low vaccination rates among the Pacifica people. Like so many minority peoples(pick a country) for whatever reasons, they choose in large numbers not to participate in a vacc effort. Unless or until a substantial majority(80%) of all the populations of a country enter into agreement in getting the jab it is highly likely outbreaks like this one can be expected to continue to occur seemingly randomly, in any country. I doubt very much that causation can be laid at the doorstep of churches, temples, wiccan midnight dances or Satanic animal sacrifices. Schools have reopened here in the US. Guess what? Huge numbers of students are now testing positive or exhibiting symptoms of infection. Quarantine, masking and sanitizing is back on big time. Their religious activities don't seemed to have played a role. Rather, it seems clear that disregard for prevention protocols that resulted in the spread. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that investigation into the outbreak in Auckland will reveal the same behaviors. |

All I can say is that the Pasifica Peoples and the Maori got access to the vaccine before the European population, due to considerations of much higher underlying health concerns. I don't have uptake statistics, and I don't rightly care to argue them.
Any gathering with hundreds of people congregating in one room is a potential hotbed for epidemics/pandemics. In this case it was
Assembly of God, rather than an indoor rock concert, or a political frenzy event.

I had an appointment for some lab work this morning, just the regular routine stuff for a 72yr. old guy. I was informed a new policy of only allowing 1 person in the waiting area was in place, again because of the increased numbers revolving around Covid19. I was asked to wait outside or in my vehicle. OK...Strangely as I walked back and then forth from getting blood drawn I noted that most of the nurses were not masking. WTH......?

!! I'd complain in writing to whomever is in charge of that organization. Those nurses are putting everyone at risk!

If I see the same sort of 1/2 yes 1/2 no masking I will be talking to my doctor about the inconsistency of their approach. |

I just discovered there is a "Herman Cain Award" section on Reddit. Here is a post. My dad had a heart attack and had to be medically diverted because the hospital two minutes from him couldn't take him, so they drove 30 minutes out. He died in transit, and I'm pretty sure he didn't have to. So thank you, covidiots (antivaxers), you give me something to relish when I read this sub, at least.

He didn't die from Covid, but he died because of someone else's preventable Covid infection. Selfish fuckers. It's almost impossible to feel empathy for them.

At church this morning my X ask "hey, what's with the mask"? I told her I was concerned again about Covid19. She poo pooed me . So I did a little research and then I called her just a while ago to inform her our cow county has set a new record for new Covid cases, 1,937 this past week, along with 10 dead.
EDIT UPDATE: It may well be that many of the new cases are mild and do not require hospitalization, the county update didn't provide that info. But the 10 dead testifies that a significant number are probably more serious.

Worksforme2, I have to put up with the same BS with a couple of relatives. One with a masters degree in math said he is tired of the BS covid and masks. I said covid doesn't care what you think, it just looks for a new host and the delta variant is 5 times more contagious. He refuses to even get vaccinated. Maybe if he dies I get his cat, his lawn mower and snow blower.
Do some people really think personal opinion influences how a virus acts or what it does?
Covid cases are up by 6 times compared to a year ago and a year ago the hospitals did not ration care or divert patients. They are now.

To me it seemed more along the lines of just being hard headed. I do still care about her well being and urged her to remain aware of what is happening with the virus all around where we live. She said she would consider it. |
