(light blue touch paper and retire quickly) i know this is an old chestnut but I cannot get my head around it. My wife gets her hair cut and dyed for around £130. My tidy up costs £10. Fair enough as she is in there for three hours and me less than 20 minutes. But, and she herself cannot explain why, why does she then tip on top of this price? The cost seems high but defendable, the tip no so. The old saying about a woman's hair being her crowning glory seems to hold true but those prices seem to be high to me, a mere balding middle aged guy.

Lessingham (light blue touch paper and retire quickly)
What does (light blue touch paper and retire quickly) mean? I don't know any reference to the term.
Two women I know and several I have observed, even women in hospice, spend time and money on their hair. Even my teens age grand daughters and a severly disabled neighbor think $130 to get hi-lights/ lighter streaked hair strands, put in their hair is a fair price.
My W gets trims at $30 and tips the hair stylist. I go to a national chain ($10) and use my retired military ID to get 10% or 20% off and give that discount or a little more to the lady that cut my hair. I was told they get paid $9/per hour plus tips for a 15 minuet haircut.
I wonder how much of a woman's hair styling time is social chit-chat with the stylist and other patrons and the actual hair work?

That's what it costs.
Most hairstylists don't make much money. Plus they take on student debt to go to for profit "schools" to get licensed. Itsa racket but the stylists are not getting rich.
I paid $50-$75 every 3 months or so to get my hair cut, but I do all my own color and I'm complemented on it frequently by hair stylists. If I had a stylist do my color oh, it might look slightly better but I'd be paying thousands of dollars a year. Even if I had more MONEY, I just can't justify that. It's so easy to do yourself if you watch some YouTube videos- unless you want complicated highlights. THAT you need to leave to a stylist.

Here in the frozen north I get a cut, colour, hi/low lights for £30. Pop her in the car and save yourself a fortune.

Light blue touch paper etc. were the instructions on fireworks way back. It now means to state a provocative idea knowing you 'll get a strong reaction.

My wife does not like the north, she thinks we Northerners are too clannish and dour. She does not get deadpan northern humour at all.

Yeah well we are also pretty straight talking people and not shy about sharing our observations. Given your W’s violent, selfish and omnipotent tendencies I would hazard a guess she doesn’t much like that aspect either. Anyway I thought of you last night. I went to the pub and had a shandy (but not a hand one 😉). A working man’s drink indeed!

I remember when folk ordered a gill o' ale at the jug and bottle window.
