I am guilty of competitive speech at times. I remind myself initially to not do it but I feel obligated to keep up my end of the conversation so I add my experiences and try to tie it in to how the conversation is going.

The difficult part is determining what fits into the conversation for both people and what is sort of self centered.

OTH I have put up with people showing me their cell phone pictures of people I have no interest in and couldn't remember the 10,15 or more people and how it related to the initial conversation.

And, pretty much universally, not practiced.
