I know, I know, it says 'no politics'. But, this is, really, only peripherally "Politics".
There is a conference going on, about the rights of women.
If you want to read about it, here's the link.
The thing that really got to me is this passage:
Under the Trump administration, US negotiators have found themselves more aligned with countries including Iran, Saudi Arabia and Russia than European nations. These countries consistently seek to undermine agreements on women’s rights at the UN, specifically around reproductive health and rights.
Just
What The
Fuck.
But yeah. Let's go and disenfranchise women again. Welcome to the world of "Handmaid's Tale".
What I REALLY don't get is: there are women driving, spearheading this. Really?
I am afraid I don't geddit. Empathy fails in the face of this. Or should I say rational understanding does?

Oh, I have so much to say about this, but it would bring in too much politics. Suffice it to say, many rights in this country are being eroded, specifically around women's healthcare. Reading this article really is no surprise; my fiends and I comment regularly about how it feels we are slipping into the Handmaids Tale (scarily, all she included in that book has actually happened in one society or another). Sigh

Sidebar-why did we get so hard core here about not discussing anything political? I'm a firm believer in civil discourse about all things. Did we have a bad experience with an argument over Trump getting out of hand, or what?

saarinista It's a forum rule, imposed by the site administration. I've been slapped down before for saying something political .... {le sigh} but I think gender politics are *really* important in the context of this site. Because they have a bearing. How much of culture is political? How much of politics is cultural? And how much does culture reflect (neo-)puritanism, misogyny, misandry, joylessness on to our relationships, our daily lives? I think the influence is HUGE.

I agree that gender politics play into our situations. None of us were raised in a bubble and the influence of cultural beliefs and societal norms runs deep. Sexual beliefs and gender norms that we embody do not develop in a vaccuum.

Yeah, they don't allow politics here. I get my fix of political discussion on Facebook at Liberty Memes (now on 'Liberty Memes 3.0' after getting censored by Facebook twice before our last election cycle.) They have a community group of over 18,000 worldwide members that get together and organize GoFundMe campaigns for charitable causes to show that people can voluntarily help others without the threat of government violence. They have a website too: www.libertymemes.com

saarinista, I suspect it’s because politics is such a charged topic and things polarize quickly; that would surely hurt how people interact in other sections. I bet, too, that it would draw in people who don’t normally post, and the behavior would not be as level-headed as it is elsewhere here. (Plus, there’s no shortage of political sites to go debate the issues.) It might simply be because politics would require a lot more oversight from Admin. This is probably the most well-behaved discussion forum I’ve seen in 30 years; it’s pretty rare to see conflict, let alone intervention. I like the range of diversity here, and I think if it became politically polarized we’d lose that.

I suspect the time required for added oversight from the mysterious Admin (whose cloaked identity intrigues me) is a major reason. But yeah, we can and do talk politics elsewhere, and it's nice to have a break. One of my personal hopes is that someday, we can all disagree publicly and civilly. Debate with those who see things differently than we do is needed to reach consensus, IMHO. And disagreement need not lead to anger or hatred, though sadly, it often does. :=( But that is a topic for another forum.
