I've seen many here say that they are hanging onto their SM because they figure no one else would want them, and it is better to be in a miserable marriage than to risk never having a partner again. That's the way I used to think. For instance, when I was 48 and accidentally amputated 3 finger tips, I figured I should stay married because no one else would want me. Finally, at age 60, I decided that I'd rather be alone permanently than remain married to a man who treated me like a roommate. And, a year after I filed, I was in a relationship with a man whom I'd known for years as an acquaintance. He became the love of my life and we are still happily together.
Since then, I've had a friend, 55, with stage 4 lung cancer. who was virtually impoverished after divorcing her husband who'd become addicted to prescription drugs. She who had the courage to look for love, found a lover and spent a year happily married to him and living in the home he bought for her before she passed away. An acquaintance who shot off part of his face in a suicide attempt, has to eat through a tube, and is now legally blind, is now living romantically with a woman who loves him.
Anyway, here's a story about a woman, 26, with stage 2 breast cancer, who posted on a dating site in 2015 a picture of her bald (due to chemo) and wearing pink boxing gloves. This March, she married the man she met through that site. He was attracted by her smile.
Here's the story:
"The couple, from Columbia, S.C., met March 24, 2015, via the online dating site PlentyOfFish.com.
At the time, Laurin, then 26, was battling Stage 2 breast cancer. Between the end of chemotherapy and an impending double mastectomy, she decided to give herself a present — photographs showing her bald and wearing pink boxing gloves.
They became her dating profile pictures...."
