is mint easy to use? I'd prefer something offline It's easy as they come. Back in the day, I used MSMoney. Then they discontinued that, so I bought whatever Quicken was making at the time. It sucked, was expensive, and I'm pretty sure they no longer make it. I understand the desire to have a program on your own PC, but I'd recommend just embracing the whole cloud dealio. You won't have to worry about upgrading or installing patches every time you upgrade your OS or replace your PC. Also, the data is always there and you can manage it wherever you are with whatever interface you have available to you. If it helps any, a few years ago (probably 8) when I went through this whole odyssey to find a home accounting solution, there were not any installed solutions from reputable companies left then. If you can even find anyone selling an installable solution now, I would be very skeptical of it from a security standpoint.

darktippedrose, Mint.com is run by Intuit. That's the company that used to make Quicken, and currently sells and hosts QuickBooks and a number of other accounting packages. Most companies are moving toward hosting their books off-site at places like Intuit. The fact is that even with seemingly unlimited funds, they cannot secure their information as well as a company whose only business and reputation completely hinge on that. Fear not the cloud. Just make a good password and secure that with information only you can possibly know. Something tells me this financial tracking is intended to be kept secure from your husband. If this is the case -- and it should be -- I would authenticate the account against a secret email address with just as much security as you apply to the Mint account itself. I think you want to establish and maintain plausible deniability with regard to its very existence. If your husband does not know it exists, he can't beat it out of you. Here's to your stealth.

I cut off my joint account with my husband so many years ago. He would wait until i fell asleep, take my debit card and go buy stuff. And then when I went grocery shopping, I'd have to take a crap load of food off so I changed my pin and took of the joint account.
this is just for the sake of budgeting and becoming better with my money so to speak

I can't help with the software. I wrote my own, years and years ago. It has absolutely no connectivity so apart from a harddrive crash, it's secure. I needed that because I had to calculate fractions on every incoming and outgoing for my bi-monthly tax returns. But for budgeting and keeping track of my spending I simply use the built-in RAM chips. If I need to, I can use a bank statement to jog my memory.
