Just requested divorce attorney consultations this is horrible. I usually suggest having initial chats with 3. They will have different personalities and approaches. By the third one your questions will be more honed and you'll have a better sense for which of them you think would be a match for your attitude. Some are gutless, some are negotiators, others are pitbulls. I'd also encourage you to post on your experience going through that phase of the process. Others would benefit from hearing it.

The first response was $300 for one hour consultation. Is this normal and reasonable, at least for L.A.?
Thanks Rick

The first response was $300 for one hour consultation. Is this normal and reasonable, at least for L.A.? Thanks Rick It varies by locale, and firm, I'm sure. In my jurisdiction (a few hours from you) it's customary to offer an initial discussion for free. The local bar association will also refer you to someone for a $15 fee and participating lawyers agree not to charge for the initial consult. It may well be worth paying the initial $300 to a good attorney, but if you can get some free consultations under your belt you will make far better use of the $300 discussion. As a heads-up, don't be surprised if they want $2500-5000 on retainer before they'll actually start work. That's funds-on-account that they bill hourly against, and you refill it when they drain it. ETA: And, yes, $300/hr is pretty typical rate for a lawyer. It adds up fast.

I heard a joke a while ago buts it's a pretty sad joke. Why is divorce so expensive? Because it's worth it.

The hourly rates here in Texas are $300 per hour and up. Yes, some attorneys do offer free consultations, but the best attorneys rarely do. When I did family law, I always charged 1 hour for a consultation. That way, I weeded out the people who were not serious.

In your experience was it at all common for people to get up to the finale and then bale out ? Or would they tend to bale out at earlier points. (this is apropos of nothing, I'm just curious)

well said everyone, and thanks flashjohn for creating this thing. As I said in a previous post many weeks ago, after years of mental abuse over my relationship, and some physical too, about 5 years ago I took myself off to the doctor for advice. I got less than nothing back. It sent me into a negative spin. I think lawyers and therapists could have made that alot worse, as I dont think they understand at all - everything is either completely black and white, or taken from some manual that someone else wrote. This forum has given me hope, strength, optomism, and friends who share and understand it all. Its brilliant. Thank you

A lawyer can easily fill up his/her day with free consultations, and not make any money. If a person has to pay for my time, I know he/she is serious.
