I have a rescue. Nearest guess is she's Border Collie and golden retriever. My H is not a dog person, so when she was a puppy I thought I was getting a laid back easy dog. She was supposed to be golden retriever, Wheaton, and maybe some husky. She's smart. She's wicked terrible terrifying smart. She thinks up new tricks for me to do weekly. She's OCD. She's controlling. She's riddled with anxiety -- and I love her to pieces. Did I mention she's smart? My trainer (who owns two malinois) shakes her head and says "she's amazing. Never seen such a clever dog -- but boy oh boy she sure does keep you on your toes!" I think all collies are OCD. Does she have a ball in her hand? No. Let me just check again? No. I wonder if she has got one now? No. Now? No. OK ... relax. Hmm maybe just one more look to make sure. No. Why not - go get one, IT'S PLAYTIME!!!

Because I'm ready ready. No no. The APPROVED way to accomplish this fast is A, then B simultaneous with C. But not until after D. "WHAT?? You can't just do C first. And alone? Omg! I'm going to lose my mind!!"

@creelunion Are you from FL? You caught the whole USF thing. No, But I graduated from the University of Louisville and am a big UofL football and basketball fan. Back when Louisville was in the Big East, I used to go to a lot of the games, and became very familiar with USF -- particularly when they were a top 10 team.

With the new safety door locks -- the kind that you cannot get locked inside the house with -- they had to chock the front door with a chair or the dog would let herself out. She'd stay close and go back into the house when she was done, but she wouldn't close the door behind her. So, he would get calls from the neighbors telling him his front door was open. Labs are smart enough for me. I don't need a dog smarter than I am.

I have a suspicion that all smart dogs are neurotic. My current dog is not very bright at all and incredibly happy and easy-going. We had another one who died a year or two ago, and she was much smarter and way more anxious. I don't think dogs were really designed to have brains - their nervous systems can't handle all that extra activity.

Border Collies f.t.w. -- I bought this new one, trained, sold by a sheperd, when one of my dogs died unexpectedly. Billy and I on his first day on the new job, went down to the river, crossed the river, I opened the gate into a pasture. Then we walked about half a mile up the river bed, opened another gate, and I sent him through: "go way back, Billy" .. and off he raced to the top of the paddock, brought back some 40-50 bulls and we commenced walking them back down the riverbed. We got reasonably close to where I'd opened the first gate when I turned around to look for my dog. WTF - he'd disappeared.
Got to the gate, the bulls started turning in (I just KNEW they'd walk straight past) when I spotted Billy, sitting on the far side of the gate, making sure that they did not do THAT. His first day at work, he'd never been on the property before ....
That's a truly professional border collie for you.
I had another one, my own breeding. I'd open the gate to a paddock with 40 bulls and 90 goats in it, and say "Freckles, get the bulls, leave the goats behind". And that is exactly what he would do. Or vice versa, if it was the goats I wanted. And then we'd get home and he'd chase a frisbee for half an hour. That was his reward.
I had (and bred) many working dogs over the years, some as smart as that, some as dumb as a bag of rocks, but none of the border collies was stupid, ever.

I wish I could train mine. Seriously, he should have been in agility contests. He is part Collie part Golden. When we got him from the shelter, he was an older puppy.
One day, he jumped over my king size bed one day (while I was lying in it) and it was as if time stopped and Angels were singing about his glory. He cleared it and looked at me like: "whatevs". I often am sad that I only have a .3 acre lot for him. I mean I saved him from being destroyed, but he needs room to run. He gets out of our gate, has figured out how to get in the "step trash can" so that we have to out objects on it. He is super smart.
When he gets out, he always comes back when he is done exploring. He follows me everywhere because he loves me best. He barks at people approaching the girls. He is bad, not trained at all - but I love him and he is such a good, sweet and loving dog.

Someone in the past few days posted that they seriously train dogs. Obviously in a thread that had nothing whatever to do with dogs. I've been hunting for that post for a very long time now. I'd love to talk nerdy with this person about dogs and training and all that jazz if they are willing. Please whoever it is tell me so I can stop making myself crazy rereading threads! Back to your regularly scheduled programming ... It't ME!! I've trained -- do train -- Retrievers. I'll probably always have one for the rest of my life. I have to admit this is at least one thing my wife brought into my life that is very positive. Let's talk dogzeeps! This beautiful guy just went to the great doggy park in the sky. Retrievers are the best.

He's beautiful @phinheasgage. I'm so sorry for your loss.
We're getting ready for our oldest K9 kid to cross rainbow bridge. He's 15, black lab/greyhound and has a rumor in his liver. Every day he's with us is just a previous gift.
Dogs rule.

I had never had one before I met her, or even thought much about them at all. I had owned cats but not dogs. She had a golden retriever when we met and I just fell in love with him. He lived to about 14 and had hip dysplasia. I'm the strong silent type but not then. So we got another golden, the guy in this pic, Murphy. We lost him about two months ago. Yeah dogs rule. You gave him a long happy life. There will be two happy go lucky golden retrievers to greet him when it's time to cross that bridge.

I know I'll be an emotional wreck when he passes, but he's made my life so much better than I've made his. My dogs have given me the affection I've crave for years. Without them, I cannot imagine how I would've survived a SM for this long.
