Is there a Legal Aid service near where you live? I think you should talk to a lawyer. If there isn't a Legal Aid, then if there is a law school near you, they may have some kind of advice clinic.

Cari - I am dealing with the IRS now. If they contacted you and not through certified mail - this is a scam!!! I was on the phone with them for 3 hours last week. I kept getting transferred them it would hang up - each wait time was 30 minutes long. By the time I finally got someone - they were super helpful!
Please call them. pM me if necessary and I will send you the phone number I have from an official document.

Well... @carissimi, I'm guessing at the topic here, but there is a popular scam where you get a phone message saying you're about to be prosecuted for tax evasion, etc. It's all BS. I literally get this call every couple weeks. Along with the ones calling about my credit card debt (not!). The brazen attempts are really incredible. Just hang up / delete the voicemail and don't give it a second thought.
