I have an great deal of respect for my mother-in-law. She started her family at age 20, and raised five kids to be (mostly) respectful. But I noticed a few things over the years. She favors her firstborn overtly. And of her eight grandchildren, she favors her youngest's third daughter. She is also a huge procrastinator and often uses the phrase 'it is what it is,' which I find dismissive and defeatist. My mother-in-law acts like a cold fish when it comes to affection. Unsure why. Maybe her upbringing. But it's definitely something my husband inherited. Knowing this, I'm baffled by how she spent a majority of the 1970s pregnant. I would categorize my MIL as a cold fish too and she definitely shows favoritism for my son (the first grandchild) vs my daughter. One time we went to visit their house and they bought tickets for a live sporting event for my husband, son and them not my daughter and I. For me I didn't care but my daughter noticed the exclusion. My ex didn't have the balls to say anything. She had one child my ex. She had the nerve to tell me after my daughter was born that she was jealous that I had a daughter and during the entire pregnancy she would say it's probably a boy despite the sonogram I took that showed a girl 99%. That's just one of so many stories where we just clashed. I don't have kids. But if I did and my bitch-in-law slighted my child, I'd be furious. As an aunt to her grandchildren, I don't feel it's my place to say anything. I just give the non-favorites some extra love. I've noticed this male-child favoritism particularly with European immigrants and first generation Americans. My best friend and her brother are second generation Italian American. Her brother is favored over her, and got most of the grandparents inheritance, while she got nothing. The same thing happened with my grandmother, first generation Polish American and her brother. My grandmother was left with nothing when her parents died, while her brother got the mother lode.

My grandmother was left with nothing when her parents died, while her brother got the mother lode. Both of my children are noticing it now and they are smart enough to know better. They can see now that their grandmother causes problems as I'm not in the house to be a buffer between her and her son both narcissists. Not my problem anymore!!

My MIL passed away this summer. She was absolutely awesome! She was a country girl and was not afraid of much. She played sports and joined the military when it was not seemly for young ladies to do so. She hunted and fished and grew her own food. She out lived 5 or 6 different men and even though she was no beauty I guess she kept them all satisfied. A few years ago, my son (in his 20s)stopped by my house and asked me how he could bleach his eyes. When I asked him why, he said he just walked into his grandma's house (like he always did) and caught grandma and her 90 something year old boyfriend "having a root" on the couch! She lived life to the fullest and I do miss her.

My MIL was the worst person on the earth, hands down! She was controling and manipulative. She fucked up my wife in ways that did not emerge until we were married. Amazing how she did that. She was sexless and passionless. I wonder how she ever got FIL to marry her. I guess he was unable to find anyone else.
She told my wife that the a female orgasm was a myth. She would stick the knife in my wife constantly... You know " we thought you lost our address" when we did not visit for 3 days. On and on.
and to top it all off, she ruined our marriage when she dropped dead. My wife, for whatever fucked up reason, decided to have an affair to deal with the grief of losing her mother. Who the fuck does that? She somehow had the ability to do this. I am sure, from her ashes, she is so proud of herself.
(do I win the contest?)

My MIL died twenty years ago to this day. Although she had some quirks that were less than endearing she was still a wonderful person. She was helpful, supportive and adventuresome. She was a beautiful woman, a trait she passed to my wife. I do miss her.
