Thank you, yes, we are fine. We didn't even feel a thing. We're about 1000km away from the epicentre, and I call bullshit on some excited journo's claim that it could be felt up here. I was awake at that time and did not hear the cups rattling in the cupboard, nor any other sign. No howling dogs or screeching cats. Apparently they set off the tsunami sirens in low lying coastal areas around Whangarei, but no tsunamis showed up.
The little whale watching town of Kaikoura is cut off; a whole mountain fell on the highway that goes through there and is the only connection to the rest of the world. They've been evacuating tourists and sick people and pregnant women with helicopters and a navy ship. Feel sorry for those folks.
