Why Charleston? The historic area, great food, rivers, beaches... Savannah is similar too. Wilmington and Charleston have entirely different dynamics. But for a sleepy beach visit, Wilmington is cool.

But for a sleepy beach visit, Wilmington is cool. The greater history, the arts scene ( ever been to Spoleto?), the music scene, the nightlife, the culture and fancy parties (I love an excuse to get dressed up and go bust out my Southern Gentlemen side from time to time), and the 300+ year old houses and gardens. I spent my first two years in the Navy stationed there, and those two years were incredibly formative (including in the sense of this tiger getting his stripes), so there's also a powerful nostalgia factor tied in. Savannah is similar, and I also fell in love with the town on weekend trips down there. It's been probably 13 years since i was there last (The Roommate has kept finding excuses for us not to visit), and I really, really want to go back soon.

Close to the beach too. On the other hand, and CT can correct me since I've only been there a few times, Wilmington is basically a tourist town. So there's not a lot there beside touristy stuff like restaurants, hotels, surf shops, etc. A giant multinational clinical trials company is HQ'd there though, so it's not just retired folks and beach bums. Oh one minor detail: They don't call NC's NHL team the Hurricanes just for their fearsome playing style. Still who doesn't love Wilmington? Also, the film industry (despite the governor's best efforts to undo that)- Dawson's Creek was filmed there, along with Sleepy Hollow, One Tree Hill, and almost every Nicholas Sparks movie in the last 20 years. There's the port for cargo ships, though New Bern is bigger. And don't forget the university- UNCW is just up the road. That's handy for... research... Yeah... The downtown area is pretty sheltered from the major hurricanes- the barrier islands usually take all the hits, and most of downtown is high enough that the Cape Fear won't won't flood it. Oh that's right they make movies and educate people there. Actually I knew all this because I know someone who went to UNC-W for a degree in clinical research LOL. Duuuuh

I love Charleston too but partial to Savannah. Savannah is about a decade behind Charleston on the restoration side of things but they are getting there. It must just be super cheap to film down South. Savannah has had it's fair share of movies including Forrest Gump, Something to Talk About, Glory, The Longest Yard, Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil and Magic Mike XXL. I try to get there as often as I can and visit.
