Whew! No way. Fortunately, he’s not coiled to strike... give him a wide berth and go our separate ways!
It’s infrequent but not uncommon to come across them on well-traveled desert hiking trails (like 100’s of people a day). Most of the time a hiker coming in the other direction will give you a heads up.
Once, when out hunting in October, I was scouting around solo and the bush nearby suddenly came alive with buzzing; a very pissed off rattler that should have been hibernating. Fortunately, I was well out of range and just kept my distance. Good reinforcement that nature will give you warnings if you’re alert.
Yeah, I’m no expert on snakes beyond knowing that the ones that rattle are rattlesnakes. ;-) But just like handling all guns as if they’re loaded, I assume all snakes are poisonous and keep my distance - it’s the safe option. That looks like a decently large one.
It’s really rare to ever hear of them in an urban setting here, but there are a lot of natural preserves and open desert here - it’s normal to see them there. Kinda like bears in bear country.
frednsa: i saw something on the wedding night (in the 60's) should have ended it during the honeymoon. i was played so perfectly. she is so wonderful in almost every other way, so...still wondering...thinking frigidity is a real thing and untreatable
