I thought Myrtle Beach was tacky, but I think the same of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinberg, so our tastes may be different. I was in San Francisco in November. People had warned me that it had become dangerous and filled with homeless, but I didn't believe that until I went there. They were right. I suggest adding Toronto to your Buffalo/Niagara Falls idea, and if you like wine, go to the wineries near the Canadian side. Mount Rushmore is impressive, but it way out of the way of most other interesting places. You look at it. You say, "Wow." And then there's nothing else to do. Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Sedona can be great to see and can be done in one trip if you drive Seattle is not on your list, but just in case -- It is beautiful but so expensive that when I was in NYC last week, 2 weeks after being in Seattle I thought NYC was cheap!!!!! Seattle is not on the list because my wife visited for work (on their dime!) and agrees with you, that it's a terrific place. Lessingham needed you as a tour guide, I guess? We'll look for a place out of town to stay, I guess. We visited New York for Martin Luther King's birthday weekend and street parking was free on Sundays. That helps the budget. Stayed in Rochelle, NJ. Getting in town made us think that a cheap place on teh island might be nice. I'll need to write a few travel notes about NYC. Do you have a specific winery you can direct folks too? Anything specific about Toronto? Or is it the cityscape that's amazing, like Seattle? Yes, our tastes differ, I appreciate both kitsch and wondrous, natural beauty. Serotonin serenity, and unapologetic dopamine assault. I find the serenity much easier to find, so I like to hear about touristy things that have lasting value. Superior natural settings are just as valuable so Muzack and your overlapping recommendations are powerful incentives.

Mirrorcrchid,.... I suggest the Asheville area. The Billtmore House is worth an entire day. Really good wine, and meals used to be reasonably priced last time i was there. In addition there are numerous waterfalls in the area, any # of wineries. About an hr away is Linville falls an caverns. There is white water raftong if you go for that also at Ashville. Minor league baseball can be found in Ashville, Hickory and Charlotte. About 2 hrs from Asheville to Charlotte for the US kiack training facility that also has a short zip line. Wait, did I say I needed to go near Asheville? If not, you're psychic. I'm scheduled to attend a wedding and visit unrelated friends very close to there. It isn't on my wife's bucket list / vaca plans, but your hints are going to be tremendously useful! Thanks! Good suggestion about minor league baseball. For anyone who hasn't looked into it, it can be found almost everywhere. It's an easy way to find something to do wherever you are. I went to a college league game this past Saturday. My daughter found out three players from our home team come from her college. She got into the spirit of things far more than I expected.

I can't remember the name of any diners. I just asked the hotel staff for local recommendations. On the road, I stopped at whatever non-franchise place looked interesting.
And I'm sure I gave that rental car's suspension more wear and tear than the miles would suggest going down all those dirt roads.

How about a place not to go. On a trip to the west coast my now X and I spent some time in LA. I saw a # of interesting spots and places I had often heard about. One spot I was intersted in seeing was the La Brea tar pits. I was expecting to see a large area with palentologists digging for animals trapped and preserved thousands of years ago. What a disappointment. The "pits" weren't much bigger than the average back yard and no one was digging for new specimens of past life. It was totally not worth the time it took to go there.

Yes, warnings are welcome.
I have heard Alcatraz is not worthwhile when I go to San Francisco this fall.

I found direct flights to Vegas. Direct flights end the hassle of the layover which means I don't burn a day going each direction, and they were cheap on a budget airlines.
Nothing in Las Vegas is cheap anymore. I am not a gambler, but the shows are plentiful and much of the food is exquisite.

Vegas is only slightly farther than Phoenix, so I figured we'd have a look. My best friend goes there constantly, so we'll have a tour guide when we go. Any specifics about Grand Canyon, slot canyons, Vegas, or maybe Phoenix would be welcome. Maybe you have top seeds for that "exquisite" food you had?

It's exceptionally rare to have a death on the Indian side of the Grand Canyon, where the glass floored overlook is, but the other side has around three deaths a year from falling. The Indian side has zero protection as far as rails, but also zero alcohol and zero overnight stays. The typical death on the other side is a male in his early 20's whose last words are something like, "hold my beer."
I had great fun on the Indian side, but not everyone has my sense of humor. The overlook lets you look straight down past your feet thousands of feet down. I scared the shit out of a number of Chinese tourists when I bunny hopped across the glass floor.
We heard the best buffet was at Ceasars Palace, but we didn't have time for the wait, so we picked Brassiere 8, a French restaurant run by a celebrity chef. The other night we had dinner in our room from a fancy restaurant at the Luxor. Both expensive, all dishes completely on point. Each meal was about $150 per person. There are cheaper options, but fine dining was an expected highlight.
The first year Blue Man Group was there, I saw them. They've been at the Luxor for over twenty years, now, and I wanted to see them again. Highly recommended. Much has changed in their show, and I missed many of the old parts but embraced what it's become.
I think you will find a number of shows that have been playing over a decade, and, it's hard to go wrong with something in business for so long. It's also hard to go wrong with a new show. But, see at least one while you are there.
While I was married, my inlaws retired to Vegas, and we would visit regularly. I was never a gambler, but Vegas is a good place for people-watching. I struck up a number of conversations primarily with locals, and found that almost everyone had a story about a gambler they had known that ended with, "...and he died broke." Such was the fate of my inlaws also, although I prefer to say, they lost their retirement savings through a series of bad investments.

I am not a fan of cruises. Much of the time at sea if there is not some entertainment being available then one is left to just look at an empty ocean. And unless the cruise is to a specific destination country or city) then it's likely you will end up landing at a little tourist trap owned by the cruise line. There is nothing positive to be said for spending a day at an island where the specialty is sun glasses. hats, or t shirts. But one positive thing about a cruise, the meals are top notch and the shows are also good. So there is some good things to be saidfor riding around on a really big boat with 5,000 people you don't know and will likely never see again.

I agree, cruises are horrible and everything I do not want in a holiday. Squashed with loads of other people… urgh. Not to mention trips to “visit” places for a few hours at a time which is superficial and sanitised. I agree the food is great though.

I have only been on one cruise, decades ago, and there's reasons why I never went on another, but I have talked to others that had positive experiences on theirs. If I ever go on another it will be with a group of friends on an adventure we all want to try.

Many states have both state and federal parks that are free or quite reasonably priced. Many have lodging (cabins, etc.) that are also reasonably priced. How about a trip to your state capital? Most capitals have some sort of tour for the state house and often there is something historical to be found there or nearby. Does your state have a zoo? Good place to spend a day, especially if you have children. How about checking out some water falls? You don't have to have mountains to find a water fall. Have a sports team or a major industry? Many offer tours and a small souvineer for the kids or you if you want. Google free things to do in your state. Get out there and have some fun.

Thanks. One link didn't work for me. The other gave a quote of $360 a night. A bit rich for my blood.
I'm hunting for places to stay now.
In Denver, we land at 8PM and leave at 8am, so basically, we're crashing for the night. Special accommodations would be wasted, so it's the $70 Microtel at 63rd street.
We might get there with a free shuttle that runs erratically and sometimes has no room, but we have Lyft as a backup: $20 to the motel $10 to the A Train station at 61st and Pena in the morning which takes us to Unions Station and the California Zephyr.
If you're in better shape than Mrs. MirrorOrchid, it's a 23 minute walk to the 61/Pena train station.
Then it's over the yellow Aspen covered Rockies. One month to go.
