I'm behind on filing my taxes. I'm getting my own 'shit' together! (LOL!) I was so naive, trusting, obedient, gullible (pick a flavor) for decades when it came to doing 'our' taxes. That was her job. One she actually ,miraculously, wanted to do. Should have known.... It involved money, power, and control! Anyways.... I'm using a tax service and they want my daughters S.S. #. My daughters have not lived with me since 07/2019 (50/50 time share parenting plan). My taxes are for 2018 and 2019.
I have loads of information in my files and on line on my children... but not their S.S. We use Our Family Wizard for finances and ALL COMMUNICATION! ( everything gets documented)
I asked my ex " Please send me S and H Social Security numbers. I need them for my 2019 taxes. Thank you."
I have over $10,000 of my share of their medical expenses for 2018 and 2019. Not including cost of living, and me receiving child support.
Here's the response I received : "The sharing of the girls for tax purposes was a reflection of the time sharing arrangement. Since both girls spent more than half of the year at my house in 2019, I claimed both girls on my taxes."
I responded back " I need them for the year 2018."
No response.
Our time sharing arrangement was never legally changed. My daughter, one day decided to tell me " Dad you're an Asshole. If you try to take me home with you You'll be kidnapping me. Mom needs us" And that's been the end of it . Radio silence. Complete disconnect. Breaks my heart!! After being her stay at home dad her entire life.
Sadly it is what it is... For now my question is about their SS# for my taxes?

I'll be showing up tomorrow at my tax office without the S.S. #'s and see what they advise me to do about it.

Get a Lawyer to write her a letter. Have the agreement in writing? It doesn't matter what she does, do what you need to do.
After all, she is paying child support.

Thanks! yea, that's the last thing I wanted to do! Once again it ends up costing me $$$$! My plan is to wait...wait until I have a lot of things that need to be corrected (all concerning $$$$) so that paying, and involving my attorney ends up being profitable for me. ( in the long run) Including a guarantee that my attorney fees get paid by my ex,due to her illegal actions.

greatcoastal Do you have a copy of a previous tax return? Dependent SS#s should be on there. I don't. Do you think the tax office can get it for me?

I assume you are a U.S. citizen and were Married Filing Jointly for 2018, maybe 2019. I agree about the previous tax return being the easiest route to get dependents' SS #. If your ex used tax software and you happen to have the computer on which she prepared it, it might be there as the tax software automatically saves a copy. If you do not have access to that computer or she used a tax service, below would be info on how to get it: www.irs.gov/newsroom/how-to-get-tax-transcripts-and-copies-of-tax-returns-from-the-irs

Greatcostal I have over $10,000 of my share of their medical expenses for 2018 and 2019.
I have over $10K medical deductions for 2019 and after a week of looking for it. I entered all of the deductions into my tax software program. I was still recently getting co-insurance bills from Oct 2019.
All of that record keeping and searching for medical bills I paid were for naught, because the standard deduction was higher than the itemized deductions. Maybe your situation is different than mine but I wasted several days keeping track of everything.
To top it off, my tax software up-dated before I was finished entering data and then the state part of the software quit working. I called the help folks and 30 minuets later I had an authorized re-install file sent to me and installed on my computer.
Taxes=no joy but someone has to pay for those $100 toilet seats the people in government buy.

I am a U.S. citizen. My divorce was in 2018. in 2017 (and the 25 yrs before that) we filed jointly. Having access to the computer has ALWAYS been something my now ex had in her arsenal. My own fault for allowing it to get so out of hand. Part of that goes back to her background in designing computer boards! My ex is a master at hiding information on her work computer. I asked my ex again today for our daughters S.S.# and told her " I need it for my 2018 taxes". She reluctantly sent it to me. Fortunately ALL of our communication gets documented on Our Family Wizard. A useful tool in MY arsenal for the day when I show all these 'problems' to my attorney. This is the first time I have used a tax service. I told the associate at the tax service, " my ex declared zero income on our rental properties for the 5 years we jointly owned them before the divorce. My attorney was very suspicious about it." The associate said " Now that you own them and are showing them on your taxes the IRS can go back as far as 10 yrs". I have to wonder what my ex thinks about that!!

I am doing what I need to do, that's what's happening. Part of our parenting plan divided up the children for tax deductions. How well (legally) she follows her tax regulations, hopefully will be her problem.

Just info but we are still waiting on our tax return. They are giving interest payments because they are so late. Any updates?

I'm still waiting to hear the 'results' from my tax service office. The whole event took some digging, and time on my part. I expect the future years to go easier for me, as I get more educated to the process.

They won't let you know that they are intest payments. When people get the check they think that their tax refund was much lower.

Just info but we are still waiting on our tax return. They are giving interest payments because they are so late. Any updates? My taxes where completed for me today. Good news and bad. The $170,000.00 that I acquired for my half of the house, was listed as income for 2018. The year of my divorce. I also had to spend all of it on a home, big enough for my 3 children and in their school zone, beach zone. I did not qualify for a loan due to my years of unemployment being Mr. stay at home dad/homeschooler, so the only way I could get a home was to pay in full. ( Not the worst problem to have- my home is paid in full. For that I am thankful!) I owe $30,300.00 in taxes for 2018. ( i was told to pay half and make payments on the rest) The tax agent showed me where I originally was going to owe $56,000! They reduced my amount significantly. ( I paid $600. to have my taxes done. $300 for each year) Fortunately I receive a payment for 2019. $6500. ( the payment will take months) I also withdrew $164,000.00 from my inherited IRA. That was going to have a 10% early withdrawal fee. Another $16,400. that I would owe. Fortunately I have been saving for this. Putting away 25 to 30% of my monthly income. I asked the tax agent about that? She showed me where The bank showed me withdrawing $6000. and that I had already paid my 10% on that amount. So I don't owe the $17,000. !! The good news my 2020 taxes won't be anywhere near as complicated, not like my year after the divorce! I wanted to share my experience for anyone else who is contemplating or gone through the divorce. The tax agent mentioned my children as tax deductions for next year. I did not ask for $$$$ amounts, however it brings up the old subject ( which ticks me off) of our adopted children, and... my ex wanting our daughters living with her for the $$$!! When you make a 6 figure income like she does, tax deductions end up meaning 10's of thousands of dollars..... sad to think that, that is her 'motivation' for wanting the children. It is what it is. All a continuing learning experience.

Those are mind boggling numbers.
I thought selling a house and buying another house, the profit from selling the old house didn't count as income. To me it isn't income, it is only inflation at work.
