The only way to keep it off the radar is to keep it as cash. Buy a heavy duty lock box or safe and store it at a hidden location. A place easily accessible to you but outside your house would be best. Second best option is to use the cash to buy something valuable that you can sell later (gold, silver) and likewise, keep it in a lock box outside your home.
Edit: With the prevalent trend in inflation, any government backed currency WILL lose value over time so purchasing a valuable commodity would retain value better than cash with the trade-off being that you will have to sell it before using the money. If you plan on keeping your stash for any great length of time, cash isn't a good idea. If you need it to be immediately available and liquid, keep cash.
