reading bbc.com news and saw this link to a Russian film called Lyubov - Love in Russian. www.bbc.com/reel/playlist/love-in-russian?vpid=p08c0tp3 It includes beautiful violin background music and old couple sitting on a park bench feeding pigeons. It's poignant to watch stories of people searching for lyubov. Do you even know it if you have it? If you don't have it, how do you capture it? One wise fashion designer concludes you can live without it. And without sex also. But it's such misery. Perhaps we are doomed. On a brighter note, hopefully in a few years we can get clean energy from a fusion reactor, the ITER (being assembled in France). It doesn't use radioactive material. It's based on the Soviet tokamak design. It needs to heat hydrogen plasma to 150 million degrees C, or 10 times hotter than the sun. Our home-made star...wild stuff...to power my electric lawnmower so I don't get more letters from homeowners association about my lawn.

I think the science is cool. It looks like they have 8 job openings. It's a nuclear facility but they're just making He atoms. Hopefully it doesn't blow up.

What happened to cold fusion that was talked about 20 years ago? I think I have a can of it in my garage. NO Wait, the can reads "cold galvanized paint." I used it many years ago on a metal fence post and it didn't rust, so it must be good. Gravitational pressure with in the sun converting H to He is amazing. What is more amazing is
I am thankful for better minds than mine. Sadly I am guessing there are also SM among this group too.

What happened to cold fusion that was talked about 20 years ago? Sadly I am guessing there are also SM among this group too. FOR US WHO HAVE BEEN IN A SM WE ARE ALL WELL AQUANTED WITH COLD FUSION NOT BEING A VIABLE CONCEPT....

I was in a Zoom call with 4 high school buddies last night. I suspect all 5 of us are in SM right now. Sad... but only one is divorced and he is in good terms with his ex. Cold fusion is possible. Perhaps with dilithium crystals.

I don't see an explanation in Star Trek how fusion reaction of H atoms produces matter/anti-matter annihilation to generate enormous power. I'm guessing that He atoms are harder to fuse.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for ITER to produce any useful results. The project was such a fiasco that the US very nearly pulled out, although this probably saved it in the end. They ended up having to put together new timescales and costings, with the first deuterium-tritium experiments being pushed back to 2035. Considering that ITER is itself a prototype, which will not be able to provide sustained net energy generation for more than a couple of minutes, and that much of the planet is converging on a total decarbonization goal sometime around 2050, it's pretty obvious that large-scale tokamak power generation is not going to form part of the energy portfolio anytime in the next century. In reality, ITER will be overtaken by renewables with energy storage, new conventional nuclear designs, and even more nimble designs of small-aspect-ratio plasma-confinement fusion reactors. An ITER-type power station has few advantages over any of these and has the disadvantages of prohibitive cost, geologically-long timescales, and that fact that nobody even knows if it can be made to work (designing a reactor that can survive years worth of high-energy neutron bombardment and keep working is not trivial). ITER's main function is as a symbol of pride to the European Union and as a matter of national pride for France. Beyond that it is really just an extremely expensive toy. I'm sure there are some metaphors for a SM somewhere in that rant

ITER is still a fascinating scientific toy! Yeah, solar and wind will expand but it probably won't have enough energy production. And nuclear power plants are scary, after Fukushima recently. I'll just bike to go to work and help save the planet. until we can live in Musk City on Mars. I was watching old videos of Olivia Newton-John on YouTube. I love her songs in the 70s and she was hot looking too. I found out her grandfather was Max Born, the German physicist and Nobel Prize winner. So I got motivated to buy his Atomic Physics book. Material to distract the mind away from the SM period. Happy New Year everyone!
