I stumbled upon a true gem when traveling cross country with my sis last year to the pacific NW. She was going to take a temp nursing assignment in Bellingham, Washington and ended up on San Juan Island. I'm headed back to visit at the end of the month if the stars align and the creek don't rise. The island has a quaint town, many harbors, state park lands and Mona the Camel. It's magical if you love mountain-ocean-forest views and beautiful sunny skies. Oh! And eagles! The eagle population is humungous! A local gent picks up roadkill and "feeds" the eagles every evening. Envision a clearing near the tree line - eagles by the dozens swooping down to pick up dinner, a fox or two patiently waiting like butlers to clean up and one very brave cat who's courage is lion sized staring them all down.

That sounds like a great place to visit. I have heard good things bout San Juan Island. The part about the brave cat reminded me of this video:

I'm thinking of hopping the pond for a 9-day tour of England/Scotland/Wales. A bit anxious going it on my own, and spending the money on myself (so much easier to spend on others). I do love to travel, though, and need to do more of it. I've taken two solo road trips. The most memorable was the Oregon coast. I stayed in Airbnb's so I had people to talk to in the evening. I explored the beaches, talked to park rangers, shopped, and did what I wanted when I wanted.

Have to say that the seaplane was amazing, but arriving here...heavenly.

Ireland is gorgeous, and filled with such friendly people. I am usually pretty okay doing things on my own and can be relatively independent, but this is a big step on my own. If I could find a friend with the funds to join me I'd ask in a heartbeat. haha! Not all of us are cooks, for sure (I love to cook and am pretty good at it) LoL - those friendly Irish ... Back in the 70s, my gf and I in a country pub somewhere in Galway or Connemarra "So wherrr'r you'rr from?" "Oh, we're from Germany" "Oh good, so you're not English then ... you know Huttler?" " Sorry?" "Huttler, you know - great man, great man, he fought the English " <cringe, cringe> It took me a while to cut through the pronounciation. Another time we were camping by a river next to the highway with another hitch hiking couple ... farmer comes over - where are you from? Oh, we went, we're from Germany - we didn't realize this was private land --- oh, so long as you're not English, it's all right, you can stay. Goodness .... ;-) I guess the older ones might not be so friendly if you're English? But yes, we got treated very well everywhere, except Ulster in those days was one scary place.

Traveling is a passion of mine. I've traveled to 36 countries ... It's changed my life. Ditto. It has been far too sparse lately. I thought I was doing pretty good as a U.S. citizen with 12 countries under my belt, but you put me to shame! (Most folks I know don't even have passports.) I'd have loved to live in Europe in the pre-EU days, when countries had much stronger identities. But still much to see!

How did I miss this thread?? Traveling is one thing Numbnuts and I enjoy together. The first time I saw the Caribbean, I fell in love with it. This is Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica. I still can't believe I hoisted ass up to the top!

The "dream trip" that's on my mind these days is Cornwall. I've been to England before, but did not have the opportunity to see that part of it.

wewbwb, you need to get to northeast Ohio and start sampling the 40+ wineries. After 5 or 6 stops you won't care where you are.
