It gets even better when you hike all your stuff in on your back and you go far enough that you can't hear anyone or anything, like cars.
I wish that was true. People were coming into the desert all night long. The two camp sites on either side of us were filled around 1:30 am. They used car headlights to set up. They didn't shine them towards our camp which was nice. On the other side of the dead lake, several people arrived around midnight and had huge lights on while they set up camp. We could hear them talking and calling out to each other. We were in the middle of Anza Borrego Desert. It was a little strange.
