Not a few times, political views arise on some of the ON topic threads. Usually these get discouraged and run their course quickly.
"Off Topic" threads can get political, and do.
My personal observation has been that members' views are, commonly enough, in passionate opposition, but the discourse is much more civil than many discussion boards where name calling and insults degrade the quality.
Perhaps this is due to our common goal of surviving/fixing/leaving our sexless marriages. We are united, so these political differences mustn't interfere with the mission.
That said, seeing people sound off with issues you find disturbing may sour your experience. Be prepared to click away and return to the On Topic threads, or select a different thread within Off Topic with a less controversial topic getting discussed.
NOTE: I'm not an admin, I have no authority to enforce any rules, real or perceived. This post merely seeks to preserve a good experience for everyone by setting expectations.
Off topic defiantly says "no politics" but doesn't seem to be enforced.
I know a few people that get frustrated with political, scientific, religion and unwanted opinions, so consider how your posts might effect others. Some people have said they will stop posting because of the reasons below.
If someone posts they don't want advice, don't give advice. Several people do not like religion based comments. Some people only like religion based comments. Of course the political right and left based comments ruffle a lot of feathers.
Some people get upset with anything that doesn't have major medical and statistical double blind studies to back up claims.
Some people don't want to hear about someone else's opinion because it doesn't seem to fit their situation.
I am guessing some women don't like men flirting with them or advice from other women.
Me? I read most of the posts and take what I can use and if I don't agree, I rarely make my opinions known. I lean towards science and large studies but I know there are exceptions. Religion based comments turns me off.

One of the most important lessons on this forum is the only person one can control is oneself. No guidelines here will please everyone even if all of those guidelines are followed. So, the best thing to do is to take what you need and leave the rest.
I rather enjoyed reading through some of the more politically charged threads. It became clear whom to avoid like a COVID respiratory droplet and with whom to engage.
Hopefully, that's in the context of politics. I've heard solid advice from ILIASM members with widely divergent political views.
Outside the "Off Topic" section, ILIASM strikes me as a unified front with a single purpose and I value all our members. That we've lost a few members when politics did stray from the "Off Topic" section saddens me.
Perhaps the (No politics) rule should be relaxed or another section created where it is allowed? Maybe we need to add a section where politics is more or less expected, hopefully with the same wonderful, unexpected civility the ILIASM community has managed thus far.
Maybe it works because our sexless marriages have trained us to encounter intense frustration and choose our next words very carefully.
This the "Shoutbox" -- basically a site-wide, group chat. (It's only visible to members.)
petrushka: Just attended a lecture on local history. Apparently the Presbyterian Scottish refugees who settled here called a 'frolic', what the Amish would call a 'barn raising'. First a working bee, then dancing and feasting.

mirrororchid: Sorry, dude. I think resentment has been the fuel for action in some SMs. It can be part of a process, eventually helpful.
