Jerri kid who got struck by lightning in (Argentina?)One lucky 12 yr old. Why it is colder than usual in the US.
I went to Walmart and about 40% of the people were not wearing a mask. My opinion is they are taking too large a risk. To me, the governor saying a mask is optional was stupid, especially with the more transmissible variants on the rise.
Everyone is pretty good about wearing masks with strangers. The ass hats think they are fooling everyone by pulling it under their nose. My husband says look another dumb one who will kill someone and never even know it. I want to carry a water gun and squirt them! 😂

Accidently was able to get my 1st covid19 vaccination today. My daughter in law called to say a friend had posted on Facebook of a vaccination site and that there were few people there. It was about a 1/2 hr. away so I took a chance. I drove up and right through the 4-5 stops to answer questions, fill out insurance paperwork and get info for 2nd shot. So another successful mission. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. EDIT: And I just want to add this is a piss poor way to go about addressing the current pandemic. Getting a vaccination should not be a matter of lucking into the information needed to find the vaccination site. My opinion is that this is another example of why politicians and governments are not trusted. NC has a democrat for a governor so it is his call on how the state goes about the inoculation effort. He's not a bad guy, just not a good governor. If a Republican was in office he would be effissorated on a daily basis by the liberal press in this state. A local Democratic state delegate said in an email: "There is no good answer why there are so many separate registration systems or why the communication is so poor. Those problems are unrelated to the also real challenge of inadequate national supply. For those interested in the data or other information, the state Department of Health maintains this site."
Well, credit for owning up to the obvious, I guess. coronavirus.maryland.gov/#VaccineI was about to be pleased that in a state of 5 million, we're coming up on a million vaccinations but the stats were: Doses Administered 877,332 1st Dose Distributed 753,175 2nd Dose Distributed 499,025 Can anyone else make those numbers make sense? Strikes me that's 1.25 million doses. If you meant people vaccinated, that might mean the same 1.25 million or 753,175 because no one who got the second dose didn't get the first. What am I missing here? Otherwise, I may write that delegate and say that Maryland has people running the program who haven't mastered grade school arithmetic. I'm guessing such people may have other shortcomings. Or the numbers get pulled from different databases updated at different times? So...not grade school math but some serious IT failure going on.

I can load a squirt gun with water and vinegar but flatulence, Commonly known as farting, passing wind, or having gas, I can not deliver on demand. That task operates on its own schedule.

Or a fart machine. I used the remote control in the airport just for laughs. Three of us had fun with it for weeks. The looks on people's faces was just so fun and so worth it!

My impression of virus transmission comes from my observation of dentists. Dentists don't seem to get colds and flus. They are also trained to not touch their faces. If you touch a surface then, without washing your hands, rub your eye or pick your nose, you just bypassed all the safety a month of mask wearing could give you.
One of my local friends is a nurse that deals with covid patients. The last time I saw her, she commented about how all her patients were mask wearers. Now, there is no guarantee, as masks are not 100% protection, but there is reason to question the accepted orthodoxy.

You are right on the money here, and there is empirical evidence to support your hypothesis. Masks absolutely minimise droplet transmission which is why they are worn in theatre/OR. So they work. But add the glorious public into the equation and human behaviour has to be factored in. The public fiddle with the mask so increase risks rather than diminish them, wear it incorrectly and change hand washing behaviours “because I’ve got a mask”. This is actually one of the reasons why it LOOKS like there is conflicting evidence about masks. One set of findings purely looking at the efficacy of masks and another set looking at the efficacy of masks plus human factors too. Folks looking to create mischief claim these are contradictory and therefore the findings are illegitimate, but actually they examine different things. An example of where the mischief intended manufacture inconsistency which IF they bothered with the detail is easily explained.

Fauci hasn't been good about being credible on the mask issue, either, which makes skepticism legitimate. Last year he said masks did no good, then told us he was lying for our own good so that nobody outside the medical community would horde masks, then they HAD to be N95 masks, and we couldn't sing indoors but we could yell without a mask outdoors as long as it was a protest, then hospital workers were muzzled and not allowed to ask if patients had been to protests, on and on. This is the same guy that botched the HIV response. Now, it turns out Fauci was involved in funding the same lab that harvested this coronavirus from bats far far away from Wuhan then allowed it to escape into the Chinese population.

I can speak only to the evidence and not the politics. I am in the U.K. so do not see the bun fight you describe. Here we have health professionals flanking BoJo who are consistent, credible and transparent about the evidence. I am not aware of any criticism of those experts on TV, in print or in conversation. Erm, and that applies to the HP’s and not BoJo, everyone knows he is full of shit.

In my jurisdiction (Victoria - Australia) the first wave was "controlled" as a raft of preventative measures were introduced. But it busted out in a second - worse - wave requiring even more stringent preventative measures, and that - slowly - got us through that wave. Then the third wave busted out. The preventative measures then were pretty spectacular involving a long lockdown, curfew, restrictions on travel, social distancing, masks, etc etc etc. And although one needs to be cautious, it "looks like" this third wave is under control. And vaccination has started which ought deliver the final blow to this particular pandemic in my jurisdiction.
Was it the masks that turned the tide ? Was it social distancing ? Was it the travel restrictions ? Was it the curfew ? Was it the regime of contact tracing that was the key ? Was it the severe lockdown that saved the day ? Was it the ban on social gatherings ?
Was it "none of the above" and just good luck that got us through ?
Was it "all of the above" where all these factors played a part in the overall picture.
Personally, I've been wearing a mask since the first wave (back in March 2020) At the time, the health authorities weren't too sure about masks, but agreed that they were not harmful.
Possibly, I have achieved nothing by masking up over this period.
Possibly, masking up prevented me contracting covid, possibly it has stopped me passing covid on to some other person.
Possibly, me masking up achieved absolutely nothing.
And possibly, it did.
The minor inconvenience of a mask certainly didn't hurt.
