That canyon looks beautiful.
I love trail running. Not too much of that around here, but I do like it. The path and terrain distracts you compared to just pounding the pavement.
I'm sort of back into running, but not too much. I'm on the verge of leaving the Clydesdale weight class, so that makes running easier.
I have to find myself a running partner. Especially for winter. Helps with the motivation.

That looks like the San Deigo River Trail or is it Balboa? It's Tecolote Canyon - about a mile and a half in from the Nature Center. Not far from SeaWorld.

Helps with the motivation. You might be surprised where you can find trails - see if there is a trail running group in your community (MeetUp is a good place to check). You can also check local parks - many of them have trail systems. If you're willing to drive a little, your trail options open up enormously. Here's where a running buddy can REALLY make a difference since it's very easy to blow off a run if you have to get in the car and drive half an hour or more to get to it. If someone else is depending on you, it makes it easier to motivate yourself. Enjoy getting back into running! For me, it's as good for my mind as it is for my body.

It's been about 15 years. I was with a group that met once a month at different trails. I need to put together another group. That was fun.

You're right about finding trails. We actually have some trails here. This city was built on a flat plain, but does have a creek running through it. Luckily, those with foresight, built an amazing park around this creek. So there are some trails. And outside of the city, there is a valley (same creek) and the trails there are quite good. That's what I need. A running buddy. I've always ran 99% of the time by myself. I have had a running partner on occasion. Taught my wife to run years ago. We do have a running store with club. The times are no good for me currently, but I hope to rectify that. I do have a highly energetic four legged partner. She's never not wanted to go lol

I'll try and be way more consistent with my running. I need to improve more. If I hit upon one of the trails around her, I'll take photo and share it.

I'm not sure I can handle running up mountains though, @mountainrunner . True confession time - I rarely run up steep hills unless they're pretty darn short or I'm running less than 8-9 miles. On my distance runs, I hike the steep ups and run the rest. One of the things that attracted me to ultra marathons was the more relaxed attitude - for most of us, just accomplishing the distance is enough. I also love the strategy of long distance - deciding when to hike versus run, when and what to eat, staying on top of hydration and electrolytes, how to use the terrain to your advantage, what to carry in your pack, etc. That's impressive! The distances you cover. You're a machine.

So they don't compare to mountainrunner's pics but I went for a run took the best trail photos close to my house. These trails are the result of a man made lake and the trees/bushes that have been there since the lake. The last pic is a 100ft trail up to a how highway overpass lol I like hills as well. Not so long that you die, but up and down.

Here is my spot for running and biking. It is a nice greenway trail beside a creek and cuts through where I work. It's paved for about 7 miles so it's convenient and then has some gravel paths too. Unfortunately there are areas that are not so nature-like. It passes under interstate 85, under a light rail system and below roads in the city. What would be nice is if they put a locker so we can store water bottles. I don't trust the water fountains. My legs (quads) died on me a couple of days ago after running only 3 miles. I had to walk back in shame. Marathon is not in my future. Maybe lack of water or stretching. So I'm sore now and resting.

It's hard for me to maintain a romantic attitude about running: My typical route was sometimes festooned with cow poop. Lol! Time for a new route! Not to mention running is not everyone's cup of tea - it just happens to work for me. ^^^ This ^^^ I don't run. Like the EOD (Explosives/Ordnance Disposal) guys say; "If you see me running, try to keep up, something is VERY wrong". I have found I enjoy cycling. Much as you enjoy running, I enjoy cycling. People who run/bicycle/lift/crossfit/whatever and claim "You have to do this! it's the best!" annoy me. No, it's the best for you, not necessarily for me. I'm so happy to find others like you who get that. I don't understand the obsession with trying to convert everyone to your hobby. Cycling certainly isn't for everyone - if you want to go any distance, you're going to end up on busy streets, and many people simply don't like that aspect. And, you can take shoes and running kit if you travel for work or vacation, at best I could pack a helmet and cycling kit and hope to rent a bike, but it won't have clipless pedals, won't be fit to me, etc. So running has that as a distinct advantage. Keep doing what you love!

I have to agree with scrimshaw, cycling is not a portable exercise routine. But my creaky knees cannot handle running but they are OK with cycling. I am fortunate to have a nearby paved trail of 57 miles through primarily rural areas.
