I am now in need of an exit plan. I've read quite a bit on the forum, as I'm sure many people have. Some aspects of an exit plan pertain to everyone, seeing a lawyer early in the process for example, but some don't. How about a centralized location for a thorough exit plan where we can select the topics that apply to us. I wasn't expecting this but here I am. If there is a thread with comprehensive exit strategies, kindly direct me that way.

The difficulty here Brother eeman is, that the cornerstone of your plan (appropriate legal advice), is going to vary from one jurisdiction to another. That's why the usual opening suggestion here is for the member to see a lawyer in THEIR jurisdiction. That said, I am pretty sure that Brother flashjohn put a post up about assorted options in regard to exit strategies. Maybe if you looked up his back stories you might find it.

eeman, you make a good suggestion. There have been some threads along the lines of what questions to ask attorneys, but I’m afraid I’ll have to suggest using the search tool to find them. One big pointer is to interview 3 attorneys. In most jurisdictions the initial meeting is free. You’ll find each has their own style, and you’ll want to pick one that most matches your intentions. By the 3rd interview, your questions will become much more pointed and you’ll be able to better see the differences between them. Get the name of your wife’s lawyer if she has one, and ask what experience they have working with together. Others have suggested getting referrals from counselors. Among other things ask what you should be watching out for in the months to come, such as hiding assets. And whether there is advantage to being the first to file, and what advantage / disadvantage there is to waiting until the timing is convenient for her. (Depending on jurisdiction, the first to file controls the timeline and can also stall out the process when counter-filing isn’t allowed.)
