I was pondering this the other day, "which side of the bed do I sleep on and why?"
I came to the conclusion that once after I was married, and sleeping in a queen size bed, I always subconsciencly chose to sleep closer to the door. ( the phone was on my side of the bed too, back in the day)
I think that is the "protector" role that I was raised to fulfill as a man.
Every night I would be the last one in the house to go to bed. It was my responsibility to secure the safety of the house and everyone in it. You know... lock all the doors, turn off all the lights, lower or raise the heat, check on all the kids, etc....
I was closest to the door for a reason, if ever there was a strange noise, a burglar, an intruder, strong winds, storms, etc... I was always closest to the door and it was my job to check it out and make sure everything was safe.
Once the first child was born ( the second, third, etc...) it was also my job to get up in the night, feed the baby, change diapers, comfort the dog, etc....
Being closest to the door allowed my (then) wife to sleep, or lay there feeling safe ,as I took care of any problems.
When I was single, none of that mattered. I slept in a single bed and had comfort facing the wall, instead of feeling like I would fall out of the bed!
Now that I am single again, and have a queen size bed, I still sleep on the side that is closest to the door. Again it's the "protector" side of me. Especially when my teens are here staying with me.
You might think that being right handed or left handed might matter? That did not seem to be the case. Or maybe what you where used too growing up? That didn't seem to matter either. It's always ended up, me choosing closest to the door, in our RV, in hotel rooms, etc...
I also (sometimes) wonder if my now ex misses that "protection" at all?
