It is a more socially acceptable way of saying "cheating".
It is usually a terrific method of bringing a sexless marriage to a head one way or another ....
There's a story up titled "Maybe Cheating Ain't Such A Bad Idea" that might be worth a read.

Outsourcing is a broad term. Mostly, it is what society thinks of as cheating, but it does not have to be.
Some spouses will accept an open relationship to save their image, or the house and children. Most won't.
Open marriages come in many forms. What works for some people might not work for you.

Outsourcing is the term often used here to refer to engaging in a sexual relationship with someone outside the marriage. In essence, having an affair. It can be on the sly, or both partners agreeing to opening up the marriage for sex with other people, or as in a few cases here the married partners agree to a don't ask, don't tell policy where one satisfies their sexual or emotional needs elsewhere and their spouse goes along to preserve the marriage.

jessie83 I differ with some of the comments that say outsourcing is cheating. I don't think it is possible to cheat on a refusing spouse who has already cheated a person out of the most basic part of marriage. I believe that outsourcing is a good term because it simply means finding someone else to do something that a spouse refuses to do.

Having an affair while married or in a committed relationship. Thank you for answering that crazy question. it's not a crazy question. I personally had never heard the term until I came on this forum.. er, I mean came TO this forum. I read the NYTimes and I thought I was pretty hip, but I'd never heard that word used except for work outsourcing to contractors. Anybody know WHEN outsourcing became the word commonly used to describe what I always called "an affair?"

Anybody know WHEN outsourcing became the word commonly used to describe what I always called "an affair?" baza probably remembers more precisely, but I’m pretty sure it started on EP about 10 years ago, and I’d wager it was probably VegasBaby who coined it. He and Penelope were the EP-era version of shamwow and ballofconfusion with an extra dose of tough love thrown in. The logic being, you can outsource the cooking, cleaning, bookkeeping, landscaping, repairs, etc. that neither wants to do. Sex is really the only thing expected to be exclusive to the relationship, but it’s not above being outsourced too. That the spouse has “right of first refusal” (ha!) but shouldn’t expect exclusive rights while being neglectful.

Thanks for the info on the genesis of "outsourcing" as a word related to sex. I've heard it many years in relation to everything else, and sadly, have had one work job (as opposed to my marital job) outsourced, leaving me unemployed. In terms of sex, I guess my husband has just gotten out of the business, so hey. It happens.
Only a decade behind. That's about right for me! ;-)
