Yesterday I got a self-esteem bump from an unlikely source.
I was in the break room talking about with one of my former co-workers from another department. We were talking about the toys we played with as kids and how we wished we had kept them because the value today are great. Of course you're not thinking about that when you're a kid.
He had mentioned that he thought by the fact that we both had the same toys that I was close to his age, 53. I laughed and said no I'm close to 60.
He had this look of shock on his face and said "You're kidding." I said "No, not at all." He said "Well you have been blessed with great genes because I guessed you were much younger, like 50." I laughed and said "I hope people are still saying that about me in 5 or 10 more years."
I wonder if some of my female co-workers think that about me, lol.

solodriver, I ride my bicycle to McDaonald's for an ice tea and when I talk to people they guys my age as about 10 years younger than the times I have traveled around the Sun. Just to be a smart-ass, I say no to their guess and tell the person that I am 12 every time I ride my bike. That makes most people laugh a little or at least smile.
When I was 12 I had a junker bike that today would be considered not safe to ride. I think I got it up to 10 or 12 MPH and was exhausted going that fast on the level. Now my bike is much better and I have had my bike up to 20 MPH on the flat and usually ride around the 14 MPH mark.
Maybe the right kind of toys helps to make a person appear younger and happier.!

Mine was a stock Schwin Stingray at that age. By that time, I had replaced the front wheel, the tires at least once, and had the frame rewelded. Such was life for the generation growing up with Evil Kaneval, however his name was spelled. I never learned. I wrecked my mountain bike last August. The bike remained intact, but, for the first time in fifty plus years, I didn't. My kids said, "It's about time." I have no idea how fast I was actually going, but my wheels were not making much contact with the ground at the time.

I like to say, "Age is mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."

My parents used to say "If you don't mind, you get what's coming!" (switch, belt or whatever they could grab)

Ironmaster I never learned. I wrecked my mountain bike last August.
From what I know, keeping the tires in contact with the ground helps. Full air suspension (front and rear) bikes are the best for doing the "tires in contact with the ground. I dismissed the full suspension idea for several years until one full air suspension bike I was looking at was too low priced to not buy. After I rode it for a week, I was a believer. Hard tails are OK but I can ride longer, be more comfortable, have less wrist and hand numbness and have more energy at the end of the ride on a full air suspension bike. I am running Schwalbe Big One Tubeless Easy Snakeskin Tire 29 x 2.35. They have the lowest rolling resistance of the 15 different tires I have tried.
I ride conservatively and still slip or have minor falls. I only had one bad fall in the last 5 years rounding a turn when the tire didn't follow the dirt trail I was on. My tire pressure was too high so I lost traction. I am a big guy so falls are serious hazards. I lost a lot of skin that time.
Still bike riding brings me an ego boost. I don't listen to people that ask, "aren't you too old to ride a bike?" NO, I am 12, when I ride my bike, is my reply

Yes, that kind of thing is wonderful to hear. My birthday was a few weeks ago, & I told a couple of the secretaries that I was 54. They were both shocked, and they said they thought I was about 42 at most.

Sure, I have been mistaken for considerably younger than my chronological age. But, possibly some of this is about your mindset too? I have known people who seem middle- aged in their twenties. I am a pretty contemporary person and try to be fun loving, lighthearted and interesting- so this can also influence people's perceptions. I was teaching recently, and during the summary questions a 19 year old student asked me where I got my skirt from.... that's a huge compliment for a lady in her forties. It turned out the skirt was older than the student! (I like to get my monies worth...)

Be careful about unexpected sources. You might encounter a jogger while rucking.

Yep. Mindset definitely adds to the impression one gives of one's age. When I was in my twenties, I remember vowing not to become in old age like my grandmother. I remember when she refused to go to a jazz club even though her nephew, a well known musician, was playing there. She said that such clubs were for "young people" not old people like herself (She was then almost 80). When my husband and I and her sister went, we were among the youngest people in the club because most of the jazz aficionados were people who were in their 60s and older.
I also remember my grandmother's insisting on wearing subdued colors like gray. She said that bright colors were for "young people." I'm 67 now, and wear whatever colors I want and go wherever I desire even if the crowd is much younger. Age is just a number....

You are all probably right about perception, because I don't act my age. It does drive my wife crazy and she'll say things like "You should act your age and not your shoe size." And I'm looking forward to acting my age less after I get separated from my refuser.

Be careful about unexpected sources. You might encounter a jogger while rucking. Funny, I was thinking about that when he made that comment. Felt a little uncomfortable for a moment but then I thought "What the hell. He's the first person to say that to me in a long time. I need to take it for what it was, and not read more into it and ruin the moment for myself."
It did make me feel good. Can't wait until I can get an unsolicited comment like that from a lady.
