Gees, only 16 months to 4 years in prison for a murder like that. That's justice for you.

It would have been portrayed as a horrendous case of domestic violence! Now I only scan read the article but I didn’t happen to see what this mans outrageous sex demands were! Once a month, once a week, once a day, once an hour? We need to be able to assess what the so called demand was before any judgment can be made on whether it was reasonable.

It does say he was asking for threesomes. I can see that being annoying and offensive. But nothing worth offing his ass

Is that the answer? No fucking way.

And she got such a short sentence... And if he had killed her for the same reason.....life! There must be more to this story than reported. She must have been a repeat victim of domestic violence or something. Surely?

Is that the answer? No fucking way. Not defending her - but obviously she was mail-order. If she didn’t want to go back to Latvia - I am guessing she thought her best option was killing him. She would get to stay in the country with insurance money. A long time ago - I had a boorish man as a bar regular that had a beautiful wife - a mail order bride. I was always sad for her. He had money and probably easily navigated a board room - but he was socially awkward and rather quick-tempered - even in public. He was never unkind to her - but you could tell they did not “get” each other at all -besides the fact that he liked pretty women that didn’t command the English language and she liked money and the USA. I used to wonder what sex was like for them - I imagined he sweated a lot and she was maybe a cold statue about the entire ordeal. But what do I know? I only have a wild imagination. Either way - killing people is wrong.

I didn't exactly follow this case, but heard bits and pieces that led me to think that it's not quite as portrayed in the media. (Go figure!)
Among the points, the swells were unsafely high when he insisted on going out that day, and neither one was experienced enough for the conditions. And experts showed the whole "left a cap off" thing that the media hyped was no chance of being a cause because it was so tiny (used to drain it for storage), but rather the amount of water entering around his torso was vast multiples more and what swamped his boat. That smelled a lot like a coerced testimony, which might happen easily if she didn't speak English well, which I didn't realize before.
Now the whole bit about the paddle is fishy, and she may well have been both opportunist and stupid about her story to the cops, since she was the only witness. Then I have to wonder, was he not wearing a life vest while boating in open, choppy water?
I suspect a lot of very sketchy details is what led to the light plea agreement.
But then there is the woman a few years back who pushed her new husband off a cliff, in Glacier National Park, I think. I seem to recall a similar sexual dynamic might have been involved. She got tripped up by the evidence.

She got tripped up by the evidence. On the drain plug? I've actually sunk a kayak off Fort Walton Beach because like a bone head I forgot to put it in before going out. Rough waters make it worse since you think that the water coming in the kayak is just the rough waters around you. She thought that part through. But I agree with JMX that as a mail order bride she didn't have a ton of options. I've always wondered about how jacked up both parties of that transaction have to be. In this case at least one of them is pretty jacked up indeed.

I assume he had a "skirt". This is the seal worn around the kayaker's body that seals the hole he is sitting in. There would be very little water getting in through it. The half inch diameter drain hole would be an issue.
