I have been pricing hotels around the state, concentrating on the St. Pete/Clearwater area. In terms of beach, crowd, things to do, cultural events, and airport access, that area seems to be the best.
However, March is high season in that area and all around the state. Hotel rooms are at their priciest. Baseball teams are in spring training, the weather is at its best, and winter is lingering up north. If we want to get a hotel together at group rates, we have to act fast. Also, there has to be a number of us going, say like 20 rooms sold for a group discount. I have been pricing hotels on TripAdvisor, which gives pretty accurate reviews as well as prices. For beachside hotels, they are running around $150 for motel-like places (clean but not much on amenities) to $400 a night for some high-end resorts. I want to get somewhere nice but don't want to price it out of some people's reach. I also need a rough headcount of those going, if possible.
If you want to budget flights, there are two airports: Tampa International (TIA) and St. Pete/Clearwater (PIE). Allegiance has cheap rates to PIE, but TIA has almost every airline around. Plus, TIA is just right across the bay from Clearwater.
